Default Del Toro's Pinocchio

Del Toro and Jim Hensen's company are getting ready to start Pinocchio 3D a stop motion movie that tells a darker Pinocchio story. Really looking forward to this and can't wait to see it as I love stop motion and anything Del Toro is involved in.

This will either be beyond awesome or beyond lame, hoping for the former and eagerly awaiting casting news.

I like Del Toro but no thanks. I'm not sure there is a need for a darker Pinocchio unless were talking about a new Pinocchio's Revenge.

By "darker" Pinocchio, I'm guessing he means the original Collodi book, where characters were constantly dropping dead, or on the verge of, to give Pinocchio guilt trips about his behavior.*

(If Del Toro was Italian, I'd assume this was their usual angry cultural obsession with why, why, why don't Americans like the original book, instead of that more kid-friendly Jiminy Cricket/Blue Fairy crap from Disney?
The answer to that question was already demonstrated some years ago:

...Sorry, Italy, and most of Europe, but a faithful version of the book is doomed from the start. )

----
* - One time, back in the late 70's/early 80's when theaters still showed kiddy matinees, the local theater automatically showed the kiddy-matinee preview to the midnight movie audience--
The matinee that week happened to be the book-faithful Italian 70's cartoon:

Although there was already a "You're freakin' kidding, right?" vibe to showing the trailer at all, you can guess how a midnight-movie audience reacted to suddenly getting grim-reaper bunnies out of the blue. )

The matinee that week happened to be the "faithful" Italian 70's cartoon, which included the book scene where Pinocchio says he'd "rather die" than take his medicine, and six rabbits in black immediately enter carrying a coffin.

LOL sounds like a darker Pinocchio would get the same kinds of reactions from parents that the R rated El Laberinto del Fauno did.

This could be interesting. I really like Del Toro.

Now, some Hellboy III news, please.

Edit: The stills give off a Tim Burton vibe. Not a fan of Burton.

The movie will be an adaption of Gris Grimly's book Pinocchio.

What's the audience for a movie like this? The images make it look like a movie designed for kids, but if it's really dark and violent, then it's not really for kids (unless your kids have been bad and you want to torture them).

Older boys won't go see it because they think seeing any animated film is "baby stuff". It's not a date movie. Most adults shy away from animated films unless they're taking their kids.

So who would see such a film? (And I like most of del Toro's other films, especially the first Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth. )

It's aimed at children 10+ and adults as it's not to kiddy but not violent enough for any age. It's main target audience I would assume would be fans of Coraline as that did good in theaters and Pinocchio will have the same look and feel of Coraline.

After watching the special features with Del Toro in Criterion's Cronos I get the impression that Del Toro makes movies that he wants to make and makes them the way he wants to watch them, he really comes off as a fan of film and I'm always curious to see more of his work. I won't rush out to the theatre for this one I don't think, but I will certainly give it a run when it comes out on Blu.

He just directed a Best Picture winning film. And now he’s heading to Netflix? Wow. He still doesn’t have the clout to do what he wants.

Netflix is drawing bigger and bigger names with their apparent promise of total creative freedom. If I were Del Toro or Scorsese or Cuaron or Greengrass, I'd be tired of having to deal with suits.

Having said that, Pinocchio is hard to get excited about. Wouldn't blame any studio for passing on it, especially since Disney is almost certainly gonna have their own remake coming down the pipeline at some point.
