Default Sight & Sound Greatest Films of All Time 2022

If I recall correctly, the list is expected to come out in the Sept-Nov 2022 period. Below is a summary of #1 films:

Critics' Poll

1952: Bicycle Thieves
1962: Citizen Kane
1972: Citizen Kane
1982: Citizen Kane
1992: Citizen Kane
2002: Citizen Kane
2012: Vertigo

Directors' Poll

1992: Citizen Kane
2002: Citizen Kane
2012: Tokyo Story

What surprises do you expect in the 2022 poll? ... Will a foreign language film top the critics' poll for the first time since Bicycle Thieves in 1952? ... Which film is the favorite to top the list (For e.g. 2001: A Space Odyssey has steadily climbed over the years if I am not wrong)? ... Lastly, if you were to recommend 10 Greatest films to Sight & Sound, what would they be (limit it to 10 to avoid making a laundry list)?

It should be. That's the point.

I’m not expecting many surprises, just a slight reordering of previous lists (but maybe the unmerited promotion of other films to tick the diversity boxes.)

My top ten? In no order (other than the first):

2001: A Space Odyssey
Au Revoir Les Enfants
Woman on the Moon
Jaws
Seven Samuraii
Breathless/Au bout de souffle
Les 400 Coups
Invention For Destruction
Kings of the Road
Holiday on the Buses

Ok, maybe not Holiday on the Buses. I’ll switch it for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Usually, films first enter the top 10 list before they go on to become #1, exceptions include Bicycle Thieves (inaugural poll) and Citizen Kane (1962). Therefore, not really expecting a film out of the current top 10 to top the poll (but you never know)!

If a foreign language film tops a poll, a good chance it could be Tokyo Story or the Rules of the Game (which remained in the top 5 in the last 3 polls. PS Rules of the Game has been in the top 10 since time immemorial)!

Should we make a list of the 10 we would send in, at least until the actual list comes out.

The Godfather
The Godfather Part 2
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Fanny & Alexander
Z
Blade Runner
Videodrome
The Apartment
Au revoir les enfants
Chungking Express

Ah I guess something happened.

Here’s hoping Apocalypse Now breaks out to the top of the list this year.

The list is automatically invalid if The Dark Knight isn't number one.

It wouldn't shock me if the movie isn't on the list. As much people hate it now, it still has its fans on the filmmakers and the critics community. Heck, Scorsese likes The Dark Knight!

Most of these wouldn't make my top 25 favorites list but as for being important I would go with:

Citizen Kane
2001 A Space Odyssey
The Godfather
The Godfather Part II
Vertigo
Gone With The Wind
The Wizard Of Oz
Casablanca
Star Wars
Jaws

I suppose if we’re talking about films that changed cinema then Star Wars has a better case than Lord of the Rings.

Also, space ships and robots are cooler than elves and dragons.

I wouldnt be shocked in 2OO1 claimed the top spot this time, its been building up with each poll and your having more and more people voting who grew up influenced by Kubrick rather than with him as a contemporary.

The directors list is quite a bit better than the general one for me though.
