Opens with 20 million Friday. Projected 40 to 45 million weekend.

Back to the drawing board, this story is over.

On a $200 mil budget, there's virtually no chance this breaks even.

Me @ WB right now:

The movie ends in a good place, leave it there. A new direction is needed in the wizarding world franchise. The damage was done with the sequel
(CoG) which was shockingly bad.

This series has been a mess because it doesn't know if it's a fantastic beasts movie or a Grindelwald and Dumbledore origin story. Choose one from the beginning and stick to it.

Agreed.
With the first movie, I was drawn to the darker aspects of the movie and I was checking out every time we got the cute animals. I'm sure for some people it was the opposite and that would be fair enough considering the movie is called Fantastic Beasts.

Franchise low opening. I think it’s time for them to just move on.

Low box office scores aren't surprising -- it's a different world than it used to be, and part two lowered expectations. I feared it wouldn't do well, which is why I feel they should have had Dumbledore and Grindelwald's actual duel at the end of this film. Now we'll probably never get to see him win the elder wand.

Just give Rowling the green light to write a book series about these stories. THAT would sell.

Frankly, I'm surprised that the domestic opening is so low. The film is truly enjoyable, worth multiple viewings if you can afford it. The resurgence of COVID is largely to blame for some of the low numbers, but hopefully this will make a sizeable profit in the long run.

It opened so low because people are past the franchise, the last film failed to get audiences involved in the wizarding war backstory, the series hasn’t had any major innovations in over 15 years, especially with sticking with Yates for all that time. Some people will point towards behind the scenes drama with those involved but I’d argue those actively boycotting the films are negligible and people have just lost interest overall.

I mean most people have grown out of Potter now, with the final film marking an ending for most people. The first Fantastic Beasts films had the novelty of being more Potter but you can’t just rely on that for each further instalment, which is where the drop in takings each opening comes from. Warner has been trying to prop this entry (and the franchise as a whole) up on nostalgia, particularly with it’s 20th Anniversary celebrations, but most audiences have seen through, particularly as it’s barely over 10 years since the main series closed out.

COVID may have deterred some audiences, but like the articles are saying, it hasn’t stopped other franchises from earning higher openings than their predecessor, even as far as Sonic 2 last weekend. So the pandemic might have resulted in less footfall, but it hasn’t crippled other releases that have managed to make audiences determined to see them.

Yeah, most definitely not it. That excuse is not gonna cut it anymore for poor performance.

Worst possible thing that could have happened to the wizarding world. 6 movies straight by arguably the worst out of all the directors.

Each to their own but it was a franchise killer because I definitely feel Secrets of Dumbledor is a better movie but is making less money.

I would have gone to see Secrets but there were no 3D showings, so I'll wait and pick it up at the library when the blue comes out.

Does it have to be in 3-D for you to enjoy on the big screen? No of course not especially cents/if you have a D box access to it to it. It’s still very engaging especially to watch with an audience were mine reacted way more than they did with avengers endgame in all honesty And even with a slightly lower theatre by comparison :-)

Well, I'm sure this is good news to your petty asses, but to fans of the series it's pretty disappointing.

I personally was really enjoying these and sad to see the series ending soon.

But sure, go ahead and mock the box office and fans for being upset if it makes you feel any more "superior"....

I mean, I hate to see a series end (even though I'm not the biggest fan of the Fantastic Beasts series, I love the original HP series and own all of them on 4K), but in the sense of WB reaping what they sowed (firing Depp yet keeping Ezra after he choked and threw a woman to the ground, thereby enabling his latest round of shenanigans which, need I remind you, he got arrested for ), that I take solace in.

Yeah, it's great that they may... possibly? cancel or recast him in his future projects, but the fact that they kept him on board in the first place while firing Depp after that vid was released just rubs me the wrong way. It's sad that this is even news instead of the given it would be for literally any other studio, and only maybe.

Same reason I'll be waiting for Aqua Man 2 to hit HBO Max. Or watch it online if I'm that desperate. Either way, they're not getting a penny from me (for said film).

I saw it Thursday night and enjoyed it.
However, it really did turn into Dumbledore / Grindlewald story, and to be honest, that's the story I want to see finished.

However, I think now the studio has to weigh how much they want $ out of the franchise vs working with JK Rowling. Presumably she has a contract somewhere for however many films are supposed to be in this series (someone mentioned 5?) but they could conceivably buy her out.

Or make two cheap crappy movies that no one will want to watch just to finish the legal obligation.

I'd rather get some decent movies and I hope everyone goes that route.

Yeah this film is worst then the 2nd. Not surprised with the bad box office. This franchise is done. GG.
