Merchandise really isn't enough of a financial justification.

What, for them to continue making the movies? I'm talking about if the movies turn no profit whatsoever.

Is FB merch selling? Harry Potter is but I don't think Fantastic Beasts merch is.

Even mediocre or under-performing movies sell toys and Funko Pops and all sorts of stuff that end up turning a profit for the studio. Obviously they want the movies to do well too (make as much money as you can from as many revenue streams as possible), but the movie alone is not the end-all-be-all.

I tried looking up merch numbers for FB but can't seem to find them. Still, HP is like LOTR or Star Wars or any number of franchises. Even if you use an FB movie to sell HP products, the money's still going to WB, so it's not like they care.

True but if they spend 200mil making one of these movies, and the movie doesn't turn a profit, do they really end up making like 600mil in revenue solely from merchandise sales instigated by the release of a new FB movie, hence justifying the money spent making it? That just doesn't seem to add up to me.

I think no matter what they say or do, it'll gross less than the 2nd.

FB doesn’t really have a structure, there’s no point, it looks grey/dull. I wish they’d just do anthology stuff about the wizarding world like Star Wars is doing (Solo, Rogue One, The Mandalorian).

If you know the backstory from the books, it's pretty clear where these movies are headed. I guess I can understand why it doesn't make sense for people who have just seen the movies (I can't imagine how little sense the last few HP movies made without knowing the books), but I guess WB (more specifically, Yates and Rowling) has committed to making these movies for an audience that's already bought-in.

Just hope WB sticks to their plan and doesn't radically alter things midway through to appease one set of people at the expense of another, thereby satisfying no one. That's how you end up with Justice League.

I can't imagine the Third one being more like the Original, the cast of characters are now roped in this fight with Grindelwald from the last one, regardless of how dumb it might be.

The problem is that Newt should be a normal, everyday guy. He doesn't need to be some magical chosen one to defeat this or that, he just needs to go and explore the Wizarding World and protect creatures. This could have been a series that delved into different magical cultures and themes worldwide, expanding the HP universe in the process.

I've enjoyed both of these movies in 3D very much, the 2nd one more so but I think they really missed the chance to make something a lot more memorable.

For me, it is. FB felt pretty singular in purpose and the characters were likable. Newt arrives in America, his beasts get loose, setting to motion this conspiracy to hide an obscurial. FB2 on the other hand felt like two movies, one involving Credence's search for his parents and the other Grindelwald recruiting for this war that Newt must fight. They retconned Queenie as a character from the likable charming girl of the first movie to the insecure manipulator of the second.

There were far too many moving parts in Crimes of Grindelwald. The HP movies worked as well as they did because for the most part it was HP's POV. If we were following what Harry was doing, searching for the Chambers of Secrets, then cut back to the muggle world to see was the Dursleys were doing for a half hour it would throw off the flow of the film.
