What I read from reviews sounds frankly terrible. They almost all say the story sucks and the messages are way too heavy handed. Apparently it’s from the writer of Raya and the Last Dragon. That movie scored in the 90s and I thought the writing absolutely sunk that movie despite its stunningly gorgeous animation and cool worldbuilding. That writer needs to learn the meaning of subtlety.

There is as least one certainty. Disney's works will NEVER stoop to being as low as The Emoji Movie.

That doesn't surprise me, but it still disappoints.

It reminds me of what Netflix is doing, where they have what is ostensibly a kids' series but it is really aimed at a subsection of Millennials. I think The Disney Channel did this as well with a couple of its shows, and both of them did it better than Nick, but none of those shows have been a resounding success so I have to wonder why Disney greenlit a theatrical movie in the same vein.

And apparently there are many who think Disney should be catering to them. Thankfully Disney does not.

If this film performs poorly at the box office, and that has always felt likely even in its early stages, naturally the people who hate gay people will blame gay people because wanting gay people not to exist in media is their ulterior motive. But the real reason this always had low chances of success is because they modeled it after previous flops Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Treasure Planet. Only God knows why. And then they chose a cheap-looking design aesthetic at that.

They should've looked to "boy's films" they've had success with for examples on how to make a new one, like The Lion King, Aladdin, Tarzan, etc. and examined what they're doing wrong after neither of their previous "boy's films" attempts, Wreck-It Ralph or Big Hero 6, were too successful. Maybe making them musicals would help. Raya also had trouble gaining traction because it lacked music, so....

I honestly think most people wouldn't care if they'd stop using it as a way to promote movies and using it as a fail-safe if the movie bombs. Plus, they seriously have to be running out of "first evers" by now.

And before someone jumps down my throat, I'm actually planning on going to see this.

Which is why it's even more crazy that a publicly traded company, beholden to its stock value, would make a movie guaranteed to lose money.
No wonder Chapek and Daniels were fired.

When movies are promoted like "it features "the first ___" it makes me skeptical of the actual quality of the product.

Was this promoted, the first I remember hearing about it was from Grace Randolph.

That was first reported on at Annecy International Animation Film Festival back in June, and was NOT paraded around by Disney PR. Same deal with Onward, that character was ad-libbed by their voice actor to be a lesbian and was not revealed until movie websites found out at the film's premiere. The only examples of this that I can think of that were officially revealed by Disney pre-release were with LeFou in the BATB remake and the Lightyear example, being officially revealed before release in the Disney+ Beyond Infinity documentary.

yeah, I don't think they mentioned it in promotion
without this thread, I would never know the film has a gay character anyway

I've barely heard anything about it. But I think Hollywood makes many mistakes with their marketing strategy these days.

It's obviously review bombing, but the interesting thing is that IMDB, aka Amazon, isn't willing to put the effort in erasing such reviews in this film's case but they did for The Rings of Power.

Is it review bombing?

This film is even further under the radar than Bros was, I would be surprised if a review bombing run were afoot.

Man people really do like getting those last night screenings, and sitting there hating every moment of movies. Must be a fun time for them.

It's possible, we are talking about dozens of votes, not several thousand. Nearly half of those givings 1's are giving 10's
