Yup! I still have a free small popcorn reward at one Regal nearby, and a free small soda at the one closer to me. Might see Maze Runner 2 next in IMAX at Regal using one of the $13 Pan tix, AND use my freebie small popcorn.
Take that, Regal! ![]() |

![]() ![]() A solid thriller with more than a few moments of sheer armrest strangling, teeth clenching suspense and terror. Owen Wilson and Lake Bell, as Jack and Annie Dwyer, are the front and center stars here and they excel in every way they can. It's great to see Owen back like this and no longer is he the dude walking around looking lost and confused, but a dad pushed to the ultimate limit and having to make the hardest choices to protect those he loves dearly and deal with the ramifications of each one. Lake Bell is not an A-lister, and it's arguable that Owen is no longer either if he ever was, but darn it she should be (both should be), because homegirl commits to her part with total abandon, throwing herself into some truly terrifying and brutal scenes without a shred of vanity to be seen. The two youngsters, Sterling Jerins and Claire Geare, playing daughters Lucy and Beeze respectively are natural and likable. Pierce Brosnan shows up, but for those expecting a big part you will be disappointed. Brosnan's part is small. I mean microscopic. However, he classes up the joint, even when he's making cracks about going to strip clubs, with a fun and funny performance, but not at the expense of being a badass when called for. Brosnan doesn't phone it in here and makes his time work. Now, No Escape is not a great film. I had to look on Wikipedia just now to remember the family's last name. That's because as fully committed to their roles as this cast is they cannot fully overcome a lack of development time. The movie opens with a coup, goes back 17 hours, and then spends all of 10 minutes with the family, and most of that is with Owen specifically, and then sh*t hits the fan and does not stop till the end. It's Murphy's Law in motion from the first gunshot to the final frames. So No Escape isn't near as emotionally compelling as it should be because the characters are thinly drawn very fast and then put right into the proverbial ringer. However, it still does pack a wallop at the right moments to save it from being totally mediocre. Owen and Lake are awesome and work their butts off. The direction is solid, but don't expect any pretty scenery as the film stays in the seedy back alleys and bullet ridden and blood soaked rooms and streets as the lead family try to make their escape in the midst of a chaotic uprising. The Dowdle brothers have crafted a diverting thriller that stands stronger than it otherwise would solely because of the strength and commitment of the leads. If they had cast anyone lesser it would have failed miserably. As is, it's a roller coaster while it lasts and will have you questioning what your own reaction would be to such horrors as this family faces, but just don't expect it to linger too long after it's over. Summary: Owen Wilson and Lake Bell own it. Hollywood please give these two some more and better parts even more worthy of their immense talent. The kids are alright. And Pierce is Pierce. He's a class act. The cast saves the film from being completely forgetable. 3.5/5 Last edited by spiderfan1985; 08-30-2015 at 05:05 AM. |

So many reasons.
- Ed Helms should not have been the lead. - Christina Applegate was the best part of the film, and she was underused. - Both of the sons were irritating. - The best parts really were from the redband trailer. - Leslie Mann was miscast. - Chris Hemsworth was okay, but not hilarious. - Charlie Day (Horrible Bosses 1&2) wasn't as funny as I expected. - Chevy Chase and the wife are barely in it. - Not enough time at Wally World. - Many of the jokes fell flat. - Ed Helms is NOT Rusty Griswald. Total miscast. - There was a cool cameo towards the end though. |
