I liked Elephant Man, but it's pretty old, B&W and considered classic by many..wasn't really word of mouth, just remembered seeing the video box for it as a kid and being curious, then DVR'd it on HBO recently...

The Elephant Man was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Picture, Actor in a Leading Role (John Hurt), Art Direction-Set Decoration (Stuart Craig, Robert Cartwright, Hugh Scaife), Costume Design, Director, Film Editing, Music: Original Score, and Writing: Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium. Definately one of the more incredible human interest stories ever made. That said, a lesser known that was really good... Mongul. If you have not seen Mongul go get it now. Great movie. |

I'm going to throw down lesser known films that you should see, it will be a mix of foreign, doc's, and smaller movies.
Foreign: Them: (obvious The Strangers stole heavily from this one) The Happiness of Katakuris: (Funny and outrageous as hell) Running out of Time: ( Fantastic and i'm sure an American remake is coming) Infernal Affairs Trilogy: ( Not really unknown anymore, but 5x times better than The Departed) Azumi: ( Kick ass female warrior) Tokyo Gore Police: (Crazy flick) Memories of Murder: ( You must watch this movie !!!, from the director of The Host) I can go on and on, I got tired of American cinema so I went on a 5 year foreign film freak out and watched everything I could get my hands on. Documentary: Paradise Lost: ( One of the best you will ever see, Promise !!, child murders who are highschool kids, community thinks the music they listen to corrupted them, it's Metalica. Paradise Lost 2: (Not as good as the first, but still worth a watch) Waco: The Rules of Engagement: (Anyone who remembers what took place in Waco must watch this, even if you don't, watch this, the footage is amazing and we were' lied to about alot of stuff that took place) Bus 174 : If you liked City of God you must check this out. Guy holds a bus and it's passengers hostage in Brazil, the whole thing was filmed. The Bridge: Difficult subject matter and difficult to watch, and will stay with you long after you've seen it. Golden Gate Bridge jumpers all caught on camera. Films: Millions: I love this movie, from director Danny Boyle of Slumdog) Family friendly film, and it's just amazing. What to do when you find Millions of $$$$, actually it was pounds. The Cabin : If you like movies that do a 180 turn part way in you will love this film. Part comedy, part caper, part horror. You have to let it unfold for about 15 minutes then you'll get caught up in it. I'll add a few more later Last edited by 1blufan; 03-30-2009 at 06:32 PM. |

Check out Clive Owen in Croupier from 1998, fantastic little independent film that I watched way back then and knew Clive would be a huge star in the future. The movie might be hard to find though

Playing By Heart. Most people I know have never heard of it. I think it's one of the better screenplays I've seen. It only made $4MM at the box office.
Large ensemble cast (Angelina Jolie, Ryan Phillipe, Sean Connery, Gillian Anderson, Dennis Quaid, Jay Mohr, Anthony Edwards, Michale Emerson). Multiple storylines, solid acting, great, great movie.... |

Confessions With Other Women - Helena Bonham Carter and Aaron Eckhart in a different kind of love story. Several years after their relationship ended they meet at a wedding. While both have their own lives now they can't simply forget the past. This romance felt so real to me compared to other movies and the acting is superb.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgOJrgbsKfM Bad Timing - Obsession, lust, or maybe just a darker portrayal of love... I don't know but the power of the acting and chemistry is undeniable. A professor, played by Art Garfunkel (yes from Simon and Garfunkel) is dating a woman (Theresa Russel, pretty damn hot) who likes to have more then one man at a time. He isn't content with that and she can't lose him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfzoetR9DoQ Last edited by assydingo; 04-03-2009 at 08:36 AM. |

Event Horizon, great sci-fi flick. Don't watch if you are already depressed!
Sweatbox, Inside the Emperor's New Groove. A non-disney documentary about the making of the Disney movie. Trudie Styler (wife of Sting), and co-director, co-producer John-Paul Davidson, do the ‘making of’ featurette through her company Xingu Films. How ironic that the only time Disney allows "outsiders" to film the creative process that is Disney......"The film’s creation was a mess. Not just that, but a scandalous one as well. The production imploded after the animation had already begun, leaving bad feelings all around and the film getting almost none of the hoopla A-level Disney toons generally get." Great film. Cheers! |

Or pretty much any Haneke movie will qualify, all that I have seen are pretty good and pretty much not well known except maybe Funny Games. I thought Benny's Video was one of the better ones along with Cache...

Just watched Heathers. I'm a very big fan of High School Musical and this movie is the exact opposite of that. Although they actually have similar messages... just extremely different approaches. Watching the movies back-to-back would be amazing. ![]() |

One of Paul Newman's lesser known but my favorite movie of his was 1994's Nobody's Fool. Starring Paul Newman, Jessica Tandy, Melanie Griffith, Bruce Willis, and a very early Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Sully is a rascally ne'er-do-well approaching retirement age. While he is pressing a worker's compensation suit for a bad knee, he secretly works for his nemesis, Carl, and flirts with Carl's young wife Toby. Sully's long- forgotten son and family have moved back to town, so Sully faces unfamiliar family responsibilities. Meanwhile, Sully's landlady's banker son plots to push through a new development and evict Sully from his mother's life. And a footnote but a darn nice one, a nice shot of Melanie Griffith's sweater pillows. |
