These are not on Blu-Ray (in the US at least) so I added availability notes.
The Sword & The Sorceror (DVD) - 80's wizards n' warriors epic, equal parts cheesy and awesome. Has the greatest sword in cinematic history - a triple bladed sword that shoots blades. ![]() Cleopatra Jones And The Casino Of Gold (Warner Archive) - The first Cleo movie is a fairly generic blaxploitation flick, especially considering Coffy came out the same year. This criminally unknown sequel changes the setting to the Far East - co-produced by the Shaw Bros! It's guano-crazy from start to finish, a blaxploitation/kung-fu mashup full of outlandish characters, humor, and action that earned an R rating in the process (the first film was PG). Cleo's make-up and outfits are completely ridiculous (even by 1975 standards), but it just adds to the fun. Extremely enjoyable film for fans of either genre. Seven Cities of Gold (iTunes) - Memory's a little hazy but I really loved it when I watched it years ago. A faith-vs-might story that follows a group of Spanish explorers in the new world and finds the group's religious and military leaders at odds with each other. I'm fuzzy on the details but I really loved Richard Egan's role and character arc. Public Enemy and Nowhere To Hide (DVD)- I'm pairing these unrelated Korean flicks because they're in the same vein of darkly comedic police stories. The protagonist of Nowhere To Hide is sort of a supercop while Public Enemy follows a disillusioned, half-crooked cop who gets a wake-up call when he comes face to face with true evil. A Better Tomorrow 1 & 2 (DVD) - These are fairly well-known but overshadowed by John Woo's later classics. Personally I consider them better than Hard Boiled and on par with The Killer because they have such endearing characters behind the gunplay. Last edited by impetus; 06-28-2012 at 02:19 AM. |

![]() ![]() Who wouldn't want to see a movie with that as the poster? Right At Your Door is intense, claustrophobic and a very well done movie. The ending is hit or miss, but the acting and tension in this film is great! Check it out on DVD (no BD unfortunately ![]() |

Pretty neat film. The most interesting aspect for me was how effective of a story they were able to make on what seemed to be practically zero budget.

Harry and Tonto (1974), starring Art Carney and directed by Paul Mazursky.
Hard to describe in words this very warm and touching film. It may be too slow for many, but your patience will be rewarded. Highly recommended! Best to check it out at IMDb http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071598/ The Trip to Bountiful (1985), starring Geraldine Page and directed by Peter Masterson. Another lesser known film with great performances by all. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090203/ Last edited by softunderbelly; 07-01-2012 at 03:29 AM. |

Get the Gringo (starring Mel Gibson) is(n't) the sequel to Payback (I think it is the sequel) It's also a great stand alone film if you didn't see Payback. If you didn't see Payback WTH is wrong with you? Get over to Amazon.UK & buy it.

I've never seen the one with Brittany Murphy but I can tell you the one you accidentally picked up is another excellent lesser known film.

I just saw a real crazy film today called Marquis. It's a French production from the late 80's I think. It's about the Marquis de Sade in prison during the French revolution. All the actors wear prosthetics to look like animals. Marquis is a dog, his cell guard is a rat, the priest is a camel, and so forth.
As one would expect, the Marquis spends most of his time talking with his anthropomorphic member which has a surprisingly feminine face. Sometimes there are claymation enactments of the Marquis' writing. I found the film quite funny, a little creepy, and just all-around weird. I can't resist something so creative. The only problem is the availability of the movie. There is a German DVD, but I don't believe it has English subtitles. The French DVD does, but as far as I can tell it's OOP. You can probably find a bootleg or download, but I hope we see a stateside Blu-ray one day. |
