Vanns.com is having a great sale on Energy Speakers. Much of the Reference Connoiseur line is 50% off.

The C-500s were still around when I bought my C-300s last year. But the dealers were asking about 3X the price of a pair of C-300s. I gave up and bought a pair of C-300s. If you have a larger room, the C-500s are what you need.

BTW, where did you buy the C-500s?
Same thing with me, I was wanting 500s but the C-300s were on sale $125 ea and no one had put the C-500s on sale at the time, I couldn't wait, I had to pull the trigger. I love the 300s though.

You haven't heard them but you will love them, they will produce excellent mids and highs and give you better low end kick then the 300s. Although the 300s handle themselves very well. Congrats. I know you will love them, and for $400 you will have speakers that will perform at the level of speakers, twice their MSRP. Break them in for about a week with a lot of 2 channel music and movies, I know they say to break in for about 100 hrs, and I would not turn them up to reference volume for about 2-4 days, unless your reference volume is rather low, but that is just me.

Rumor has it that Energy is supposed to be replacing their Reference line as well. The "C" series just became the "CF" series although they are still the Connoisseur series. I have no idea what the plans are with the Reference line, but I don't know how they would improve them a great deal. The RC's are some really lovely sounding speakers. Way under appreciated compared to the likes of Monitor Audio, Paradigm, Klipsch and B&W. Or maybe that is why they are revamping.... WHO knows...

I've had my Energy speakers for about 6 years now and still love them like the 1st day I got them! They sound great... at the time I got these I couldnt afford the flagship C9's and the C5's where in the budget at about $1350 CDN for the pair. My Connoisseur series goes back a few years and according to a source, these are part of the last line that was made in Canada before E got bought out... but I can't confirm this 100% so who knows.

I only started my HT project last Oct. and before that I only used these for music. The sound of these are clear, crisp and almost feel like the band is in the room with you. I listen to everything... from death metal to flamenco and these bring out nice detail in each track. For such small speakers they have a lot of OMPH!! to them. I have the bass setting on the HK set at 11 o'clock and when watching a movie theres a nice rumble going on... one scene that comes to mind is DarkKnight, when the Hospital blows up I was like "NICE ".

Pron Time!

Hey 4x12, that's an awesome HT. Love those C-5s. They look like the precursor to the C-500s!

I don't know how you found a used C-C1 so quickly. Way to go and congrats!
The C-C50 was clearly a mismatch. The improvement in the sound must have been pretty dramatic.

Your C-R1s look very similar to my C-R100s bipoles. I love mine. After adding my bipoles, most movies especially the more recent ones (not so much the older ones like South Pacific or Final Countdown) sounded more spacious or more like being at the movie theater.

Hey Rwo,

Yeah the C50 wasn't that great with my setup. When I picked it up it was more of a "temp" solution but it wasnt working out. But its murphys law dude... when I finally found my C-C1 from a seller in Toronto, Ebay had 3 of them pop up at $50-$75 less then what I paid for mine! But at least I got it local and saved on duty fee's.

The sound difference was night and day! I didnt expect to hear such a difference. Everything sounded clear and had more presence. The C50 had a muffled sound and wasnt mixing with the fronts.

I'm now starting a hunt for some C9's for the HT room. The C5's will go back in the music room.

in the pic = the one on the right looks a good size. but the one on the left is more a true representation . they are 11 1/2" tall (my rears are 16" tall). i have only one movie on them, so i am not going to judge them for at least a few movies more.

so i've had my c-500's for about a week. i've noticed they're not as efficient when compared to my old polk monitor 50s. now my c-c100 is broken in quite nicely. i know i haven't yet put the recommended 100hrs of break-in time on the c-500's. i'm a little disappointed with them so far but am so far undaunted as they still have not yet met the 100hrs of break-in. also, i think what i'm using to power them, a sony str-dg820, is not up to the task. a receiver upgrade is next on my agenda, so i'm hoping a denon789/889 or an onkyo 705/706 will do the job. i also thought about the idea of getting a yamaha 663/665 for now and adding an amp later for the energies, but i've done some research on 2 channel amps...good lord they're expensive...

Hang in there. Your C-500s and my C-300s are alike in that they won't sound that impressive anyway at low listening levels like what you would use during break-in. Believe me, once you crank those babies up, you'll hear spectacular midrange and smooth clean, crisp highs. My son has Polk Monitor 50s and I have heard them quite a lot. They are good speakers too. However, what you are probably missing or used to hearing are the louder and more brilliant highs from the Monitor 50s. The Energy Aluminum tweeters are what made Energy famous (and their patent design) because the highs are real smooth highs and not so accentuated (others descriptions like 'warm' are commonly used for Energy tweeters).

Unfortunately, I have to concur that the C-300s and even more so the C-500s are not efficient speakers. I would still consider the multi-amplifier approach and use your old AVR as a pre/pro if it has that capability (I am not familiar with Sony AVRs). The Emotiva XPA-3 isn't expensive ($600) at about the price you'd pay for an entry level AVR. Use it to drive the C-500s and the C-C100 each at 200 W RMS into 8 ohms. Those aren't hyped, or read the fine print watts, but real power from huge power supplies that will make those three speakers sound like you have never heard them sound before. I don't have the Emotiva but I certainly know the benefits of using separate power amps in my HT setup. I will never again buy a receiver.

I have the C-300s and I use a Sony 920, the step up from yours, now I know that there is a different power supply that the 920 uses over the 820, the 820 shares the same one as the 520 and 720, and the 920 shares the same power supply as the DG-1200 and DA-2400ES. I have no trouble pushing my Energys and in fact they sound incredible. Perhaps as RWO said above you are more used to the brighter highs that the Monitor 50s are giving you. Energy will give you smoother more natural highs and great mid-range. Plus you will get some good lower bass with the 500s second woofer. I think it is just a matter of getting used to new speakers and their sound. Definetly if you are looking into getting a new receiver, buy one with pre-outs like the Yamaha 665 so you can add an amp later.

Do you ever listen to music in 2 channel, if so then you should notice an improvement in sound as your sony is actually pushing out closer to the 100 watts per channel as opposed to the 40-60 wpc its pushing in 5.1/7.1 mode.

They got a great sale going on at audioadvisor for those of you looking to get more or upgrade.
i'm interested to see how you're new set-up is going to sound. i also just bought a pair of c-500s and a c-c100. the rear c-100s will have to wait; my polk monitor 30s are handling rear duty at the present moment. it took me a while, but i think i'm coming around to the energys. i was watching a standard def channel yesterday and could have sworn it was coming in as dolby digital as opposed to 2.0 stereo. the imaging the energy's had was amazing. i do most def want to send some more power to them...

i'm torn b/t upgrading my receiver to the new onkyo(salivating over a better auto-cal and more features over my sony 820) or upgrading to an older refurb onkyo model w/ pre-outs, like the 706. it's just if i go the route of pre/pro, where oh where will i come up w/ the $$$! i also now want a second sub.

upgrades will be the death of me...by my wife's cold hand...

I'm excited to read all your comments on how great Energy products are and their performance.

Just two nights ago a friend sold me his Pioneer Elite VSX-74TXVi an offer I couldn't refuse. Soon after I pulled the trigger on a set of RC10, S10.3, and RC MINI CC. This will be my first home theater set-up.

Surely there is a great sale on digital cameras somewhere! Looking forward to seeing them Soviet!

I'm glad to see there are Energy fans as pleased as I am with the line. I really want to pick up a pair of RC-Mini bookshelves for surround backs. Vann's has them on sale for $99 each right now, but my wife has me on a strict budget after spending $700 on my recent upgrade. I still have my RC-10's, which would make fantastic surround backs, but they're too large to use with my current living room arrangement.

congrats, the RC series are a great set of speakers, if you have the chance, take advantage of the Vanns.com sale on their RC floorstanding speakers, they are like 50% off.

Yeah, get some pics up, I can't wait to see your set up. One thing I noticed the other day with these C series Energy speakers is the imaging is fantastic, I was watching the lakers game and somehow it was on 2 channel audio and I thought the voices and action were playing on all 3 front speakers, it was awesome once I figured out that was just the left and rights giving me that wide of a dispersion.

Very Happy with my C-Series 7.1 system that I got in liquidation from FS.
Nice Staging and imaging and yet very warm sounding. RC Series is defeniteky a step up to this but at the price I got em for it's more than satisfying it's a steal.

i noticed yesterday that vans was having a 50% off sale on energy speakers. Dont know if it is through the weekend or not. I was doing some research and on them and saw the sale, seemed pretty decent although the selection was pretty thin.

Here's the link. I wonder if they are clearing them out? There are even less today.

well they just discontinued their C series line, and the rumor is that they are going to redo their Reference series line. The reference series would be up there with the likes of B&W, Paradigm, Monitor Audio, PSB, KEF iQ, and others like that, they are a very good speaker and get great reviews. I think that the discontinued C series and the rumor of a new RC line is why Vanns is selling them so cheap, Vanns is an authorized dealer so I would expect that they would have whatever is new that is going to replace them later, if that is what Energy is in fact doing.

The things is with the sale that is going on with Vanns right now you would be getting an incredible deal. A pair of RC-70s for less then $1k when they List for $2200/pair..... That is crazy. Makes me wish I hadn't bought the C-300s when I did.... but I only paid $250 for the pair that are typically $550-600/pr. So yeah, there are some good deals going on right now.
