Default dvd burner/blu-ray burner

got a question that i hope can be answered. if this isn't the right forum feel free to move it. anyway, i am in the process of deciding on whether or not to buy a dvd burner or a blu-ray burner here shortly. the main drawback to the blu-ray burner is that they're too expensive. my question is about compatibility. if i were to get a dvd burner i would mostly be burning movie files and such. the formats would mostly be .avi and .wmv files. i have a sony bdp-s300 and i'm wondering if i can burn those type of files onto a dvd that can be played on my bd player as either a dvd or as the files. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

ok. thanks. what i just wanted to put the files on a disc? would my blu-ray player still be able to play it? $199 is too much i think, but i'm still deciding. what are the pros and cons of owing a blu-ray burner vs. a dvd burner and vice versa.

Pros of a Blu-ray burner - Burns Blus, DVDs, and CDs

Cons of a Blu-ray burner - expensive, long burning times, expensive media (Blank BD-Rs)

Pros of DVD burner - Fast burning times, some are very slim, very inexpensive media in DVD - Rs or RWs.

Cons of a DVD burner - Only burns DVDs and CDs, some can be bulky that burn at faster rates

That depends on the player and/or software used(if on computer)
Computers, no problem!
STB player - what do the specs say, will it play AVI?

$199.99 for a 8x BD burner is a killer price!
8x = 288mbps or 36MB/sec burning.
On the same listing page, there are 4x and 6x drives - at the same or higher price.

DVD burner cannot play or burn Blu-ray.
Blu-ray drive can burn and play BDs, DVDs, CDs.

still that's way too high i think. i can get a dvd burner for more than half that price. i don't want to burn through all my money if i can help it. thanks for the imput. my main concern is being able to play in my sony bdp-s300 not only burned dvd's and what not, but also files that are copied onto a dvd. a data disc if you will. some files will play and some won't. i want to make sure that whatever i get i can play it on the ole' blu-ray player.

DVD drives used to cost way more. Years gone by...
As for playing in a player, get ConvertXtoDVD and it will make the "files" playable in anything that will play a DVD.
