In November, for two nights only, BAM and Wordless Music present the U.S. live premiere of Terrence Malick’s (Badlands, Days of Heaven) THE TREE OF LIFE, with 100 members of the Wordless Music Orchestra and Choir performing to a full screening of Malick’s 2011 masterpiece.

Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes, this impressionist epic meditates on the whys and hows of the universe, framed within an engaging coming-of-age tale set in 1950s Waco, TX. Featuring brilliant performances by Sean Penn, Brad Pitt, and Jessica Chastain, the film boasts Malick’s signature striking imagery and ambitious themes while incorporating a rich range of powerful and iconic music. Including compositions by Berlioz, Mahler, Brahms, Smetana, Zbigniew Preisner, Giya Kancheli, John Tavener, and Henryk Górecki across its two-plus hour running time, the film is as awe-inspiring musically as it is visually and philosophically.

Tickets go on sale via bam.org/thetreeoflife starting Monday, July 25 for BAM members, and Monday, August 1 to the general public.

I am going to tryyyyyyyyyyy come - obviously its a huge commitment so need to check stuff first and maybe sell a few boxsets to fund the trip but would love to see this.

Would be AMAZING, features some of my favourite music.

THANKS for setting this up, JW007. I'm definitely going. I'll be visiting a friend in Maine, and we're going to take a bus down to catch this and the MET's Egyptian collection.

He has to work, so we're aiming at for the Nov 18 performance. We'll probably in the city on the 19th though, too.

I'm up for seeing how people's plans pan out. It would be great to meet up around either of the two performances, and if we could do that after everyone has seen it, that'd prolly be maximo.

Ideas for hotels? I stayed in the West Village at the Jane last time I was there. Tokyo-size rooms, but a real Wes Anderson vibe and affordable for NYC. And a nice rooftop cafe/bar. Any other suggestions?

Sounds great RojD! By the way, I still want to visit the "Museum of the Moving Image" in Queens. Have you heard of that place or been there yet? It's supposedly one of the best museums in the world for cinema history and whatnot. They have a lot of famous directors and writers who hold events there. I think Terence Davies was just recently there to hold a screening last week. http://www.movingimage.us/

What better way to visit such a place than with certified film buffs like us. Maybe we should make that place where we all meet up, instead of a bar like I thought earlier. I think that'd be perfect! They are open from 11:30 am to 7 pm on Saturday and Sunday. We can hold the meetup on Sunday at like around 2 pm or something for all the blu-ray.com forum members at that museum!

I stayed at the Jane Hotel once, and know exactly where that is. I was just in NYC a week or two ago and actually stopped down there again on Jane st. to see how it was looking. The rooms went up to like $125 a night (it used to be like $90 a night years ago!). And yeah, they're super tiny! But that's an option for people to stay there! I usually go with Airbnb.com and rent out either a private room or entire place.

Looks like I'll be at the Friday Tree of Life and at the MET most of Saturday. I'm going to Egypt with friends over Christmas (yeah, I know....hard life), and we're going to meet up at the museum and spend a big chunk of the afternoon in that exhibit. I can meet up pretty much wherever afterwards. I have to return to Maine Sunday morning because a friend has to work, so I can't do the MET thing another day.

On a side note are you from egypt or a tourist?, If you are a tourist you should visit luxor, Aswan, Hurghada, Sharm and Dahab, I'm egyptian so I know.

Well, I went ahead and bought 2 tickets for The Tree of Life 100-piece symphony orchestra for Sat. night, Nov. 19 at the B.A.M.!

Here are my seats!

G39 Mezzanine 4
G41 Mezzanine 4

They were $35 each. I couldn't see myself buying the $55 or $75 seats even though the location was better. I've seen the film enough times and the music is the main thing for me. It will sound good regardless of seating choice.

So I'm up for meeting for sure.

And I'm thinking we should meet up after this is over, on Sat. night, at "Videology" in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It's a bar with a theater in the back. We could meet there like around 11 pm!

Awesome news! So we are both in for the show. And even better you'll be in the city another night too. So where in Brooklyn will you be staying at? I'm aiming to reserve an entire apartment somewhere in Williamsburg if I can get a friend of mine to split it with me. The bar, Videology, is in Williamsburg also, on Bedford Ave. So once we get more updates from other people on the forum, I will post the official announcement for the after-party on this thread and in the Criterion thread.

Hey all,

I finally got back from NYC this past weekend and have to say that the screening of The Tree of Life at the Brooklyn Academy of Music was pretty amazing.

A couple of guys on this forum (RojD and SammyJankis) were supposed to meet up with me sometime that weekend but things didn't fall through, so none of us got to meet up.

However, seeing this epic Terrence Malick film in a huge theater complete with a 100 piece symphony orchestra and live choir was phenomenal. At times I wasn't sure what to look at... the movie or the musicians? I mostly stared at the screen, but since I'd seen this film already, I wanted to take in the spectacle of seeing a live orchestra scoring a film, so at times I was thoroughly amazed at how seamless the live music went with the movie. They were perfectly on cue. Now I want to see more favorite films of mine with an accompanying live orchestra! I can't imagine how beautiful it would be to experience a movie such as 2001: A Space Odyssey with a live orchestra too. Does anyone know if such experiences take place on a regular basis somewhere around the world?

I've attached a photo I shot right after the credits finished rolling as the musicians played. The moment of the photo captures the applause from the audience and how the many musicians were honored. To be honest, I hadn't seen this film in about 5 years, and many parts of the film gave me an amazing emotional experience that I had yet to feel. The two parts that really got to me was the 15 minute universe-evolution sequence with the music by Mozart (Lacrimosa) as well as the finale beach sequence with the music by Berlioz (Agnus Dei). Man, what a wallop! I got hit hard. 'Twas hard to not keep a tear running down my cheek sitting there on the Mezzanine level with my actress friend Marci.
