Default Firmware crashing b/c of non-licensed software

I'd like to get a PS3 solely for the BD capability (I'm a non-gamer), but also would like to install PlayOn to get Netflix streaming abilities.

But I've heard that when gaming consoles update their firmware, they sometimes check for non-licensed programs and will crash the system if any are found. For example, if a PS3 update finds a non-Sony program the PS3 may crash for good. This is only what I've heard, is there any truth to that? I know it's true with Nintendo and MS systems, but has anyone else had issues with the PS3?

What programs are you talking about? I don't know of any unapproved, 3rd-party apps for the PS3.

PlayOn is a server/streaming app that you install on a networked PC--not the PS3.

Why would you buy a PS3 just as a standalone BD player?

All capabilities that are available in a standalone player and now with better performance than the PS3.

I think you know something I don't.

What do you mean. I have seen posts of people having problems with their standalone players that others don't see using a PS3.

Why not get a LG or Samsung player as they have built in support for Netflix
