Default Receiver

I've seen a few questions asked about receiver heating. I have the HT-S9300THX. While it gets VERY warm (as it should while operating) it hasn't overheated. I've even made the mistake of leaving it on all night long but with no input . It was warm but since it wasn't driving anything it wasn't hot. I've really loved the system and it's proven to be a wise investment over many other brands available.

Thumbs up Onkyo

I have 2 Onkyo receivers: A TX-SR608 and an HT-S6100. I've never had the least bit of trouble with either one overheating.

I chose it because, it's on the top end of my budget, it's THX which I've had good experience before, matched speakers that looks solid on paper/picture, it plays Pandora, etc.

First impression (I haven't connected it yet):

Huge box! I expected it to come in separate boxes but it came in one humongous box which I had trouble moving (requires at least three people IMO) so I ended up opening it and transporting the pieces individually.

Because I have to be at work, all I can do is read the manuals. Everything looks good except for one thing... Zone 2.

Zone 2 is also one of my deciding factor. I thought I could have another set of stereo speakers in another room. Yup, it does work that way but... Big BUT... I have to use the system as a 5.1 instead of 7.1! Not an option. And I just bought a pair of Polk Audio speakers for that zone 2! Have to return the speakers or sell it somehow.

I have an embarrassing confession -- I underestimated the size of the speakers. You see, I would rather be over than under and this unit is significantly oversized for the room. Get ready for this... A 10x12 bedroom! Probably smaller.

I did consider other receiver/speakers (not HTIB) but none fits my requirements. Either they have limited features (receiver) or beyond my budget (speakers).

This unit has an MSRP of $1,099 but I got it for only $799 with free shipping. I think that's a good deal. B&H has it for $100 more with $130 shipping.

That's it for now. I'll continue unpacking tonight and maybe start thinking of the placements. It won't be easy. I did consider putting it in a larger room but it'll be tedious to move things around and I doubt my wife will agree moving the new 3D TV out of the bedroom.
where was it $799?

My HT-S9400THX gets delivered today! Woohoo!

So excited! My fiancé got it for me for $750 which I was happy with seeing as the price on Amazon fluctuates a lot and at present mimics that of Bestbuy.

I looked at accessories4less but after the extended warranty and shipping the refurbished unit came out $20 less than brand new.

Just gutted I'm 5000 miles away in the UK so I can't set it up yet

Not sure if you guys are aware, but onkyo outlet sells this at refurb for $650 if you are a member, just sign up.

https://www.shoponkyo.com/products_1...s=1&group_id=1

I always bought Onkyo refurb and never had one issue with anything I ever bought over the years and I have bought a lot from Onkyo.

Also, for you guys with very warm Onkyo's, I bought this and it works great! Fits perfect on my TX-NR414 and now it is so cool, it doesn't even feel like it is on.

I bought this HTIB when it first came out and never had any major problems with it, just once in awhile when i'm switching between inputs the audio goes away then I have to power it off then turn it back on so the audio comes back. the only cons I have is it only has 4 hdmi ports so I had to buy a hdmi adapter for more ports, and also no dedicated turntable connection (like most onkyo's high end receivers) good thing there are some turntables with pre amp already in it. everything else is golden and I really think this receiver is up to pair with the high end models. I love the dsd over hdmi so I can use my sacd's and dvd-audios the way it was supposed to be.

The user manual has a check beside 1080p/24. My guess is that someone said that and others have latched onto the bad info as if it were true.

I'm having a slight lip-sync delay with the system, I enabled the lip-sync option in the HDMI setup but still having it

what is usually the cause of a delay of the sound?

Lip-sync will only work if your TV supports that option. You can manually adjust the audio still though (delay it) to match the video. It;s under Setup - Source Setup - AV Sync.

Normally the sound is not delayed, its the video that is. If this is the case then adjust you audio on the AV sync screen until it matched the video. If the video is coming before the audio and your audio is set to 0 ms then you will have issues. Video contains more information then audio thus taking longer in the HDMI chain. Verify your dvd/bd player is at 0 ms if it has its own delay before your start with the receivers settings.

Other causes could be attributed to not having correct distance settings in the receiver as well. So make sure you read up about Audyssey calibration on and do that properly first.
