Default Sony vs. Microsoft

Who do you think will win the battle for living room supremacy, Sony or Microsoft? Although Microsoft has loads of cash to buy its way in, ultimately, I believe Sony has the better portfolio to compete in the ever-changing consumer electronics industry as a whole with their name, experience, products, reliability, and quality.

Sony is primarily divided up into smaller sub-companies which is why it is such a diverse company with an even more diverse portfolio. We have:

Sony Electronics
Sony Pictures (Columbia and Tristar)
Sony BMG Music
Sony ATV Music Publishing
Sony Computer Entertainment (Playstation Brand, etc)
Sony Plaza (a.k.a. Metreon Malls)
Sony Ericsson
Sony Life
Sony Banking
Aiwa Electronics

Microsoft on the other hand is just microsoft with its Windows OS.

So, what do you guys think? Sony or Microsoft will win the future of the living room?

MS is far more than just " Windows OS".

take one look at the playstation store and the xbox live marketplace, and you can clearly see who has the huge advantage. i don't think either are ready to take over our living rooms tho

I don't think anyone will take over our living rooms. Unlike computers entertainment does not need to be that centralized and evolves too fast. On the other hand MS has tried to get a foot in the living room for a long time and they have not. Be it web TV or the IRIQ remote or.....

Realistically guys, who would you think can survive the duration of such a competition between Sony and Microsoft for control of the future of home entertainment? I will say that money does not guarantee victory, though, it does help.

Microsoft averages about $3 billion profit per quarter I believe whereas Sony usually manages to net a profit of over $500 million and sometimes over $1 billion per quarter if they are lucky.

I believe Sony will win the battle to our living rooms, because Sony is deep in that market and Microsoft is doing poorly with most of their attempts to penetrate the "living room" market. Ex: Zune...

i see were u coming from but microsoft is mostly a software company, were sony is a hardware company with a huge stock of patents being used every day such as the cd or walkmen but my point is microsft(other then money) has littel to offer other companies while sony has production facilities for lcds playstations tvs dvd players ect ect so sony can offer better "bribes" (other then money) also to relate it to blu-ray its like 40% sony 38% pannisonic and 20% philips and 2% random when factored in sony and pannisonic they out way microsft (but for raw patent power IBM rules all)

if you mean BD/HD DVD, then Sony. With the PS3 there is no reason for them to give up on it, while MS is just in it to slow down adoption

If you mean it more general. The answer is none. Take it this way, JVC gave us VHS, Toshiba was the biggest party in DVD and now BD is on its way. Unlike computers the future of our living rooms will be in constant flux for ever with all the companies fighting for a part of the next great format.

Sony owns content, Microsoft does not. Makes a big difference.
