I have a nice hoppy beer and some mango habanero fries sitting in the theater waiting for this to start!

This was insane. This felt like a modern interpretation of the Heavy Metal magazine artwork and animated film. It shot right up to the top of my "Best of the Year" list.

So far this and Upgrade are my Top 2, but a rewatch of both is necessary to determine who takes the gold.

I was really disappointed with this movie. It seems like the director has inherited very little of his father's talent and is just being weird for the sake of being weird. Mandy is mostly pretentious drivel of the biggest kind.

The first 45-60 minutes was slow as shit. Literally nothing of interest happened until Nic's broad gets kidnapped. Sometimes it felt cheap when the movie cut away or faded to black when something big was about to happen. Especially a bit near the end of the movie was a downer, because we didn't actually get to see it happen; just the aftermath. We know that character is f***ed, so why not show it? I was also disappointed that our anti-hero didn't use his awesome crossbow (The Reaper!) more. He uses it 2 or 3 times and that's it.

The way it was shot annoyed me too. Like the director and cinematographer bought some Instagram filters and decided to put them all in the movie. It didn't serve any purpose to shoot it like that. Not like Suspiria with its amazing lighting. This looked like it was all done with Adobe After Effects anyway. Despite that there are still some nice looking shots, like the burning church at the end. Mandy didn't so much remind me of an '80's horror movie, like everyone (professional and amateur critics alike) is saying: it looked more like a psychedelic '70's horror movie. Most '80's horror movies are very different and it's like everyone and their mothers forgot that all of a sudden.

Nic Cage is famous for his overacting and I wish I there was more of it. The bathroom scene was great but after that we never get to experience such outbursts again. Linus Roache was overacting too, but not in a good way, and I'm still not sure if Andrea Riseborough can act at all. It was nice seeing Bill Duke again, despite his role being reduced to a cameo. If you want to see Nic Cage really lose his shit watch Mom and Dad. You can't compare the two but he was hilariously over the top in that movie.

The music by Johann Johannsonn was great. Dark, unsettling and brooding.

Nothing about this movie makes me want to check out the director's first movie Beyond the Black Rainbow. If I want to see Nic Cage vs a religious cult I'd rather watch Drive Angry again. I also would've liked Mandy a bit better if it was 90 minutes instead of 2 hours. Now there's a lot of padding in the first hour and some serious pacing issues.

5/10*

I liked the movie a lot more than you did, but I agree with you on that point. I didn't get much of an 80s vibe from the movie at all.

Weird for the sake of weird as a criticism seems to always mean "I'm uncomfortable with things I'm not used to".

I haven't seen Halloween yet but willing to bet Mandy will remain my movie/horror film of the year. That's a nice set posted above. If I hadn't bought the lp already I'd be on that.

The project would gross like 10 million and you'd never hear from the director again but it'd probably be a masterpiece if he stuck to practical effects.

‘Mandy’ Disqualified From the Oscars, Which Is Heartbreaking for Jóhann Jóhannsson Fans

When the Academy announces the 2019 shortlist for Best Original Score on Monday, December 17, don’t expect to see the late Jóhann Jóhannsson on the list for his exceptional “Mandy” score. The psychedelic horror film, directed by Panos Cosmatos and starring Nicolas Cage and Andrea Riseborough, has been disqualified from all Oscar races, IndieWire has confirmed with a representative for the movie. While “Mandy” was never a top contender, there was a small but passionate campaign pushing Jóhannsson’s original score (IndieWire’s chief film critic Eric Kohn was one of the more vocal supporters).

Variety reported earlier this week “Mandy” was disqualified from the Oscars because “it was released on VOD before it completed its qualifying run.” When asked to elaborate on the disqualification, a representative for the film told IndieWire a “qualifying run” means the film is released for one week in Los Angeles with a minimum of three screenings per day. “Mandy” became available on VOD before the completion of its one-week run and was deemed ineligible as a result.

Jóhann Jóhannsson’s “Mandy” score was recently named the third best original score of the year by IndieWire’s David Ehrlich. “It’s a fierce emotional arrangement of mournful synth and somber guitars,” he wrote, “interspersed with jarring eruptions of percussion — all of which demonstrate the complex vision of Icelandic composer Jóhannsson.”

Jóhannsson passed away in February at the age of 48, shortly after “Mandy” had its world premiere in the Midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival. The composer earned widespread acclaim for his collaborations with Denis Villeneuve, including “Prisoners,” “Sicario,” and “Arrival.” Jóhannsson was Oscar nominated for “Sicario” and “The Theory of Everything,” and he was posthumously named Composer of the Year at the 2018 World Soundtrack Awards earlier this year.

The “Mandy” original score marked the best chance the film had at entering the Oscar race. The film had a one-night-only theatrical event September 13 before opening on VOD and in select theaters September 14. Sources close to the film said distributor RLJE was planning on sending the Academy music branch a two-disc set of Jóhannsson’s acclaimed score prior to the film being ruled ineligible.

A movie like this would never be in the awards race anyway if it was released normally; It's far too singular in its vision and appeals to very specific tastes (seriously, this would instantly get an F on CinemaScore before box office results came in), something that the Academy probably wouldn't get the appeal of.
