Default New 3-D ACER computer monitor for $399 (3-D Blu-ray software might be coming?)

The ACER GD235HZ 1080P quality 2D monitor with 3D feature is scheduled to ship in Feb 2009. It will have a suggested retail price of $399. Mail order price of under $380. The display is 23.6 inches wide with a refresh rate as high as 120HZ.

This monitor might only offer 1080i 3D over DVI. 2D Blu-ray would be at 1080P at 60HZ or 120HZ with 3:2 pulldown added in the Blu-ray software. All computer based Blu-ray player software I have seen adds 3:2 pulldown. Some graphics cards do a reverse 3:2 pulldown. Hopefully in the future computer hardware and software will work together to bypass 3:2 pulldown completely from both 2-D 1080P/24 and future 3-D 1080P/48 movies.

The shutter glasses with software to view content in 3-D will cost $199. Hopefully by late 2010 there will be some Blu-ray player software companies that will release a 3-D Blu-ray player for the computer.

Someone that already owns a Blu-ray drive in their computer can upgrade to Blu-ray 3-D at a small cost compared to $3,000-$5,000+ for highend separate components .

To upgrade to Blu-ray 3-D on a computer that already plays 2-D Blu-ray would require the following:

1. New computer monitor for around $400.

2. New Blu-ray 3-D software player ($100-$150+ estimate, no BD software out yet, all existing BD-ROM drives will work with 3-D Blu-ray).

3. Shutter glasses for $200.

Note: Some older graphics cards do not have 3-D graphics drivers. For those that own older graphcs cards that support only 2-D, then a 3-D graphics card would need to purchased also.

Update

It looks like HDMI 1.3 and possible DVI will support 3D 1080P. HDMI 1.4 will not be needed.

That's cheaper than I thought it would be. I'd have to see it in action before I judge.

I don't understand why the software would apply the 3:2 pulldown with 120hz refresh rate

Hopefully future Blu-ray computer software will have a 1080P/24 output option. All current software adds 3:2 pulldown and outputs at 1080P/60. Some graphics cards will do a reverse 3:2 pulldown and output 1080P/24. For the best quality the software needs to output native 1080P/24 to the graphics card. There also needs to be more desktop computer monitors that support multiplies of 24fps. Most consumer 1080P desktop monitors only support 60HZ when running at 1920 X 1200 or 1920 X 1080.

In the movie theater 3-D films are encoded at 2K with 48fps (24fps for each eye). The 48fps image is flashed on the screen at 144HZ. Hopefully future computer monitors will support 144fps. At 120HZ 3-D movies would use 6:4 pulldown (3:2 pulldown for each eye).

Currently there is no Blu-ray computer software yet that supports the future 3-D movies that are planned to be released in late 2010 or 2011. Once that software is developed then we will know for sure which graphics cards will work.

Most likely all GeForce 200 series , 100 series, 9 series, and 8 series graphics cards will work with 3-D movies. There might be some other brands and models of graphics cards also.

Below is a link to NVIDIA graphics cards that work with 3D gaming, 3-D downloaded movies, etc.

Note: It is unknown at this time if these graphics cards will work with 3-D Blu-ray. We have to wait for the first 3-D Blu-ray computer software to be released to know for sure.
