This player is now on my radar since I'm concerned with some of the issues the LG UP970 is having, plus who knows when they'll update it to Dolby Vision since they pulled the firmware. I'm just going to wait till Black Friday to see if I can get a good price for the Philips 4K player.

Well I got mine this morning. Fired it up. Did the update on the firmware and stuck in my first 4K movie (Arrival). Things were going good at first. I did get a message saying BD-ROM USB NOT READY. PLAY IS ACTIVATED BUT ERROR MAY OCCUR or words to that effect.

So I start the movie and it plays fine, not much noise from the player. Then about halfway through the movie it freezes. So I stop the movie and try starting again but nothing. I turn the player off. I put a flashdrive in the USB port and start again. Forward to where it froze and it plays fine through the rest of the movie.

I did notice a couple of dropouts on the sound as well.

After it was done I thought I'd play a bit of the blu ray to see how it compares. Sitting right in front of my 50" TV I could barely see the difference. Contrast and colors were a little better but not much and definition was about the same. Makes me question whether I should spend money upgrading blu rays I already own.

I'll play more 4K's and see how they fare later. I'm watching X Files blu rays upscaled right now. Very nice.

Sounds a little discouraging and disappointing. Hopefully you will see improvement with 4k discs and won't have the freezing. I have this player on my radar. Looking forward to more updates from you.

Thanks for sharing!

I think from my reading that there are still way too many compatibility issues between UHD discs and players. They better be offering regular updates for the foreseeable future on all these UHD players until these issues get resolved. If/when I buy a player, I expect it to play all UHD discs. I don't want to have to worry each time I put a disc in if it's going to be an issue or not.

Exactly! And not only does the player need to play the disc, it should do so without freezing, stuttering, black/blank screens, noise issues, etc. Iím not sure which player is most reliable, but I really hope Ď18 players improve all around!

Miss the days where my old fat PS3 played every single thing I threw at it with absolutely no hiccups at all!

These kind of problems always arise in new formats. Blu Ray went through the same thing. I remember the early days and every player thread would have people complaining because their player wouldn't play certain discs or special features wouldn't work etc etc.

I read the Oppo 203 thread from the beginning and that player had all kinds of problems too but they fixed most of them with firmware updates. Hopefully they can do the same with other players too.

I've played another movie (X Men Apocalypse) without any problems and it got through two episodes of the X Files without a hitch so we'll see how it goes.

Is Arrival a Sony disc? Good to hear the above 2 played well!

I've watched about 10 or more 4K's now and a few regular blu rays and the first one was the only one that I've had a problem with. I'm beginning to think it was something I did. Maybe I accidentally hit the remote and paused it. Everything I've played since then has played flawlessly and the player is quiet too. I might watch Arrival again and see how it does a second time.

Now if we can just get that DV update.

Wait, so despite the description on Sams Club, this doesn't actually have DV support? In other words, a waiting game just like the 970?

I just bought this unit online from Sam's. Should be shipped next week. The DV firmware waiting game is a bit frustrating, however, I have no reason to think it won't eventually arrive. In the meantime, I will be enjoying 4K.

While it would be nice to have DV out of the box the fact is there are only a few 4K blu rays that have Dolby Vision so far.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=276448

I only have 2. So it's not like I really need it right now.

By the time they release the firmware I might have 3.

Nearing 30 dolby vision titles now. Close to a 3rd of my 4k are dolby. Pace is picking up fast with most of the biggest releases coming in dv, even some catolog titles happening. It baffles me nobody but oppo has an at release ready dolby player still. The big makers are sending them a lot of extra business with their delay. Seen so many people on this forum picking up the 203 who never woulda spent that much on a player if sony, panny, lg etc had a dv player out.

Is panny gets this update out quick they will make a killing off it.

I guess it's more important for you then. There aren't that many of the DV 4K's released so far that I want to own. It doesn't look much better for the near future either. I plan on getting the new Kingsman movie and Dunkirk next month and neither of them have DV either. Same for Blade Runner 2049 in Jan.

I'm very pleased with this player. Apart from the hiccup on the very first disc I played (which I'm sure was my fault) it has played all my 4K's (21 movies) flawlessly. It's very quiet and it's one of the fastest players I've ever owned.

what is that and does this mean your player was firmware updated to support Dolby Vision?

how do you like the 7502? have you had any issues with it with 4K playback? is it noisy during movie playback or is it quiet? I have the 7501 and I am happy with it.
