Default From Here to Eternity-60th Anniversary?

From Here To Eternity Blu-ray

Haven't heard any announcements yet, but I'm really hoping that this year will see the release of "From Here to Eternity" on blu ray, seeing as how it's the 60th anniversary and all. Maybe Sony will license it through Criterion just like they did with On the Waterfront.

Anybody else have high hopes for this?

Yeah, me too. Stuff like Gilda and The Lady From Shanghai would be great fits with Criterion but they seem more like coin flips than like sure things. Something like In a Lonely Place seems more like a question of when rather than if.

From Here to Eternity feels more the latter.

But who the hell knows these days

Excellent news! Should be another great Sony restoration. Awesome movie..will make a great double feature with The Thin Red Line.

Question:

IMDb lists the aspect ratio at 1.85:1, but I've only seen it presented at 1.33:1. Which one is accurate?

I'd recommend putting in a Pre-order on Amazon UK now as it's very cheap atm (around $16US shipped), and that release is guaranteed.

Hopefully Sony USA isn't stupid enough to hand this off to Twilight Time.

Nice! Montgomery Clift and Frank Sinatra are pure gold in this one. I have it in DVD, but it's a pretty soft transfer. Hopefully, they'll do this one right.

This is definitely a day one purchase for me because I LOVE Frank Sinatra in movies; such a good actor!

I believe it has much the same aspect-ratio issue as On the Waterfront: It was shot at Academy ratio (1.37:1), but in "open matte" format intended for 1.85:1 projection--though some sources say Fred Zinnemann intentionally eschewed widescreen (the same was said of Elia Kazan for OtW). Nonetheless, all its home video incarnations to date have used the full Academy-ratio frame--again, same as OtW until its Criterion BD.

When playing the DVD zoomed to 16:9 (essentially replicating its theatrical projection), the Columbia Pictures logo is properly framed; the opening titles are slightly high, but still fit within the screen. Though I haven't examined every scene, I wouldn't be surprised if it gets a 1.66:1 transfer much like Criterion's preferred ratio for OtW. (Disney also prefers it for most of its films animated at Academy ratio for widescreen projection from the '60's to the early '80's.) If Criterion gets it, we may get all three ARs like OtW; if Sony or TT releases it, we'll probably get whatever AR Grover Crisp thinks is best.

(Edit: Regardless, I already have the UK BD on preorder myself just in case.)

I watched this on TV a few months ago. Excellent film and I look forward to adding it to my Blu-ray collection.

This should be a bigger release...feels like a throwaway catalog effort based on the price and lack of hoopla. (so far, anyway...)

That's what I was thinking too. But, SONY released a great version of 'Taxi Driver' and it was fairly cheap too. So, maybe this will be as well.
