I hope they will start releasing some blu-rays soon. Esp if they do good quality releases. Some early DVDs were just bad.

The Joan Crawford DVD for SUDDEN FEAR is the worst looking DVD I've ever seen for a classic film. Looks like a VHS transfer.

At any rate it would be cool to see some high quality releases like Metropolis and La Dolce Vita on Blu

This could be really good news. When two companies merge you get more capital for new projects (i.e. Blu-ray releases) and big, progressive ideas for growth (i.e. releasing all of your movies on Blu-ray). I was just browsing Kino's DVD catalog. Man, do they have a collection.

I know Kino has a good reputation for quality transfers (and that holds true for the SD titles I own), but what about Lorber? I've seen mixed reviews, but that was a several years ago. Has their recent material been treated with appropriate respect? It looks like it is Lorber that's purchasing a controlling stake in Kino, so I hope the combination is going to err on the side of Criterion-quality restoration work, and not try to push films out as cheaply as possible. Thoughts?

There's a story about this in Video Magazine, saying they're expected to release the restored version of Metropolis in DVD and blu-ray sometime next year (after a theatrical release in the spring).

In the early days of DVD, Fox Lorber (as it was called then) produced some of the worst DVDs ever--substandard transfers, poor sound quality, etc.--which was a shame, since they put out many films that were otherwise unavailable. I haven't seen anything from them lately, but let's hope this merger is a good thing.

Both companies have tremendous libraries, and this could indeed be a very interesting merger. After Koch Lorber became Koch Lorber Films, the company did a number of adjustments that led to much more respectable SDVD releases.

I look forward to having the new company in the Blu-ray family. And let's hope that 2010 brings us La Dolce
