Unhappy Can Sony BDP-S1 Blu-ray output 1080i throught HDMI

Do you know if the Sony BDP-S1 Blu-ray Disc Player will have the option to output a 1080i signal through the HDMI connector ( I know the default output is 1080p), perhaps through Menu selection etc.

I realize that the other option would be to use the component output which will be outputting at 1080i, just wondering if the same can be done throught the HDMI connector on the Sony BDP-S1 Blu-ray Disc Player.

I asked Sony and they said that my 50 inch recently purchased TV cannot take 1089p input throught the HDMI connector.

Here is what Sony said:

As the Sony KDS-R50XBR1 television cannot accept 1080p format signals directly, you will not be able to connect the sources that output 1080p format to this television directly.
In future if you want to connect a unit to the television that has 1080p format output, we suggest that you connect the output of the unit that can output the video signal in format other than 1080p and the television will upconvert the signal to 1080p format. There will be a negligible amount of picture loss in this process.

I am sure that it will do 1080i over HDMI, probably 720p also.
