Exclamation Toshiba 4k x 2k res LCD at CES

Toshiba will unveil a new LCD TV at the CES soon.
I don't care for it's upscaling capabilities, which I'm sure will be touted to boost DVD to even higher resolutions than the inferior Blu-ray format.

But a native (?) 3840*2160p TV could be very interesting for slide shows of >8Mp photos. This could mean the end of the last major disadvantage of digital photography over analogue slides, the high resolution projection!
Since I switched to digital only I really miss the slide projection sessions.

Here is the Info:

"The high performance of the Cell platform bring superb picture quality and networking interactivity to TVs. Demonstrations at CES will include real-time super resolution imaging, using a 56-inch, 4k x 2k pixel panel to display images that the Cell platform upconverts from 1920x1080p to 3840x2160p, and also upconverting of content such as Internet video to high picture quality by application of “Resolution+” technology in combination with newly developed noise reduction technology. In addition, a 55-inch backlit LED panel controlled by the Cell platform will be showcased, and demonstrate high-speed control of all picture parameters, including an innovative local dimming function. Visitors can also see how the Cell TV goes beyond breathtaking image quality to deliver extremely fast and easy operation of networking functions. "

I would be interested in a 3840 X 2160 resolution display for use as a computer monitor. When it comes to editing graphics, photos and illustrations there is no such thing as having too many pixels in a monitor.

Until there is native 4K movie content available to play in the home and/or video game consoles able to address such a high resolution display at fast frame rates that kind of display for casual viewing is overkill.

And here lies the problem of this kind of displays IMHO, they're only meant for special/professional uses and therefore will be out of my league thanks to the price tag.
1080p will be standard for TV and consoles for many years to come.

So I think I'll have to wait many years to be able to project my digital pictures with a satisfying resolution.

Then you better get rid of your PS3. It's got a cell processor.

Yes, I'm well aware of that. Wasn't the CELL a Sony, IBM and Toshiba colaboration?
I'm also aware the military bought 200 PS3's last year for some super computer experiments(if I recall correctly). Just felt like mentioning that, why I don't know
It's not the cell processor I have issues with, just inferior Toshiba audio/video products. Say like HDDVD.

Cheers

Why are so many people still stuck in the format war? I just don't get it.

HEHE.
I'm in no war. I choose Blu, end of story.
It's Toshiba that's still waging a loosing war. Upconverting DVD players which according to them are just as good as BR players

Slides are optical. I wouldn't call it "analogue."

+1

Toshiba makes some very good displays for the money. It's pretty foolish to write the whole brand off because of one dead product to which you have some sort of emotional aversion.

Emotional?

I didn't think anyone could see my hysteria as I typed my posts
Curious, have you purchased any Toshiba products lately?
I just prefer better than Toshiba, that's all.
Better doesn't mean spending more money, just realizing others make better products.

According to the Size vs Resolution Chart, you'll be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 1440p at 52 inch at 3-4 feet. NO MATTER WHAT .

Well, there can only be emotion involved in a statement of such hyperbole. Even if Toshiba makes the highest-rated TV at some point in the future, you still won't buy it, according to your statement. That's irrational emotionalism at its finest.

I'm glad I didn't write off all Sony products, just because UMD was a failure. The PS3 is by far the best media player I've ever owned.

To answer your question, yes I bought a 37" Toshiba LCD for the bedroom last year and I couldn't be happier with it.

Ok I give in.
If and when Toshiba makes the best A/V WIDGET out there I'll get it.
It just might be a long wait?

I agree with you on the PS3.

Sorry to come on so strong. I'm just cynical about what I perceive as odd grudges people on this forum have because of the format war. When I sit back and look at it though, it doesn't really matter and I shouldn't have kept harping on it.

Seriously. It's almost a shame that it has to be marketed primarily as a video game system, because it's a such a killer overall media solution for a home theater.

I guess I should post something that's actually on topic: personally, I don't think this 4K TV will have a practical application in the consumer market. I don't really see the point, when there is no consumer source for 4K material. Upconverting anything should be a last resort.
