Interesting. The plot thickens...so while the video encode on the Austrian is probably a straight port of the UK, it seems to have its own audio "situation" going on. So basically, the DTS MA track contains all original effects, except a different effect when Leatherface meets the screw wrench, and the mono contains the original screw wrench effect but is missing others (the same ones missing on the old Dark Sky dvd, I presume)?

Oh, and as someone pointed out to me, that new Japanese release seems to be missing the 'Shocking Truth' documentary. So that's a big mark against it.

Me and some friends are wondering which is the best looking blu ray.
Proof that the US BD uses a noise filter and the Austrian BD does not! The Austrian BD looks much better imo!

Finally, that's settled! haha... I ended up ordering the UK blu ray, so I hope it uses the same AVC encode as the Austrian.

Exactly what I was thinking. I don't see any noise filter applied/removed, just some screen caps that look exactly the same in terms of detail, but some feature higher brightness.

This thread with Don May Jr., the guy responsible for the restoration of the film featured on the Blu-Ray release may be of interest for those who really think this Austrian company went back to the original materials to make a new transfer:
http://www.avmaniacs.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45126

The UK release, which can be found for next to nothing now, features a great transfer, all the extras from the other releases (with a few added interviews thrown in, making it the best package in terms of extras), and unlike this Austrian release all the extras are on the BD, instead of putting the film on a single layer BD, and the extras on a DVD.

Well then that is sorted once and for all. The Austrian BD does not have a brand new transfer.

I was just under the impression that maybe the Austrian BD used the Don May transfer "as is", where as Dark Sky (maybe) applied a touch of additional DNR to "calm it down". While there's a slight difference in brightness, to my eyes it also seems that the Austrian has a touch more grain in a few if not all the shots. That's just my eyes though. I don't think anyone could argue they're not both great looking.

The Austrian and the UK BDs differ, too. Regarding grain.
If you compare the UK with the US, and the US with the AT, than you see, that the AT even has more grain, and seems to be a bit brighter.

Edit:
The UK is also AVC Coded...

is the UK version from Dark Sky also?
and how does it compare to the US version?
btw:the US version is very possibly now OOP.
also: as far as the Austrian version, I prefer the US look.
it's very close, but it's certainly not worth the trouble of trying to get when it looks so similar.
even changes to display settings could probably make both look almost identical imo.

The art work looks awesome! .
I didn't really like the original TCSM though, I liked the remake much better.

The UK version is from Second Sight and uses an AVC encode. It has a slightly tighter grain structure and slightly "oranger" reds but other than that there's practically no difference. From the same master...I think they may have split costs on it but I'm not positive on that. Second Sight's has the same extras + a couple additional interviews.
