Default Sony hints at sub-£400 PS4 launch price

PS4 could launch at a lower price than its predecessor the PS3.

Admittedly, the PS3 launched in the UK at an eye-watering £425. Launching PS4 above that would be ‘brave’ to say the least. But with the new console packing plenty of tech, just how low can we expect it to go?

“We listen and learn and take the judgement from every console launch we ever have and we have to be informed by what the strengths of our PlayStation 3 system have been, but also the challenges of that,” Sony Worldwide Studios VP Michael Denny told Edge.

“We want a system that can reach as broad a gaming audience as possible but whilst being a system that’s deep, connected, rich and immersive and is going to give a very focused and differentiated experience than anything else that’s out there.

“We’ve got lots of information yet to give out on PlayStation 4. The initial announcement phase that we’re in now is just to explain the vision to everybody. Part of that vision is we have created a console absolutely focused on gamers – and we want that to be gamers in the broadest sense as well. I think to some extent I can ask you to draw your own conclusions.”

Nintendo’s Wii U Premium launched £299 and has struggled to gain traction in the UK. PS4 will of course target a largely different demographic – one that Sony hopes has more in the way of disposable income.

The safest bet is Sony launching a number of SKUs, quite possibly two – an entry-level machine and a deluxe version. Expect more in the way of storage and accessories with the high-end SKU.

It most likely has no choice but to stay sub 400, but it'll be interesting to see just where the final price ends up for both models.

Personally, i'm fine with putting down 400-450 for a package deal with 4-5 games included and an extra pad. Hopefully we'll see more details regarding pricing around E3

I too see no other way for Sony to go other than to offer this at around the £350 mark.

Even if there are 2 SKUs with a second one coming with say the EYE and a bigger HDD I still don't think I would pay £400 just for those 2 items. I don't mind paying £400-£450 as long as I get a few games included, second controler isn't really a deal breaker though.

I'd prefer it if they just kept it to 1 hardware SKU,

Console, DS4, PS Eye, Wired Mic, and all the esential cables. All for £350.

Then retailers can just create their own bundle deals with extra games and contrlers etc. which could bring up the price to anywhere between £400-£500 depending on the bundle.

Sony please take my money!! Let me preorder the damn thing

It will be great news if it comes under £400 but a package deal with an extra controller and a couple games would be better.

All rumors indicate that ALL SKUs will come with the new eye, with them pushing social connectivity as much as they are there's no way they're going to let a large portion of the players skip out on having an eye. Additionally, we don't know the full extent of the light bar, maybe the eye has to be connected to even play (a la the current move/eye).

I already have my money set aside, I'm just waiting for the pre-order!

400 Pounds = $609.60
350 Pounds = $533.40

obviously for us 400 would be an increase...

At the current exchange rate £1 = $1.52417 so £400.00 = $609.667. Consoles tend to have a higher price than in the US upon release though if my memory serves me right. Just in case I miss out on when a UK price is announced if it is before a US price announcement then you can always check here: http://www.xe.com/

You cant just do flat comparison of UK to U.S. There other factors like VAT and the fact that salaries are higher in the UK for the same kind of work as is the cost of living being higher. Plus the sun doesn't shine in London, ever.

I would guess at 450 - 550 EUR/Dollar price ranges on average. I see no chance of it being under 400 Euro mark. Sony would make too much of a loss on the hardware. I read they lost close to 5 billion dollars on PS3 hardware todate

For £350 I would snap it up, I've just moved over to the PS3 to play some exclusives and I love the console, MS will have to pull something out of the bag to get me back!

This time around I think Sony or MS would be mad to launch at a price higher than £300 ($400 - $450) to be honest. The whole gaming world has changed and the idea of what is good value now compared to 2006 is very different. Xbox360 and PS3 launched in a pre-smartphone, pre-tablet world.

I'll stick my neck out and suggest £249.99 for PS4 in the UK!!!

There's not a single part inside the PS4 that comes close to being anywhere near as expensive as the BD drive and CELL were in launch PS3s.

There's nothing to suggest that the PS4 will warrent a price of £400 let alone £400+ so I'm very confident that it'll launce around £350.

If anyone was following the tech thread back in Feb would have seen the price breakdown for the parts and it was already about half the cost to build than the PS3 was. And that was before whatever markdown Sony will be given for their bulk orders.

So I'm guessing you didn't watch any of the Olympics or the most recent London Marathon?

It didn't rain and the sun was shining!!!

They're just special effects added in to make people think it was sunny. Sony did it to show off the power of the PS4
