I think it is the sounds that matter most, German BDs should have the original sound effects.

so the 2.0 track is an original mono/stereo track and not a downmix of the dodgy 5.1?

colours are definitely better but there isnt any more detail form those shots. I thought the Italian disc also had better detail compared to the MGM (ie less or no DNR)

Five scenes run longer? Anything significant? And why I wonder?

Main thing is the beating, that runs about half a minute longer, the others are just a few seconds here and there. The German DVD carried a different restoration to the one in most other countries, I assume they just carried on from there. Oddly, the preamble card with "Where life had no value, death sometimes had its price. That is why the bounty killers appeared" has been replaced with a German one on the blu even though it was in English on the DVD.

Sound on both the films is original, not downmixed

I honestly thought the PPV re-dub was awful and jarring, so even without the extras i prefer the German release

Bright Star is only available in a German release. I am wondering if it will ever be released here so to speak.

Apparently the German versions of A Beautiful Mind and Dances With Wolves are the best there are.

I've only seen the re-dub, but I heard that it makes slightly more sense than the theatrical dub, (Apparently one of the re-dubs explained why there are no hospital staff around during the finale), and that the "morgue" line was one of the best in the franchise...

Northwest Frontier 1959. I remember loving this at the pictures (I must have been about 9) & enjoying it on the telly over Christmas an age ago. A Blu-ray has just been released in Germany (Flammen Uber Indien), I took a chance & ordered it (only 10 delivered). I just buzzed through it & I must say I'm quite impressed, very colourful & sharp picture, it won't give Lawrence Of Arabia a run for its money, but it'll do for me. I don't know if it's the same transfer as the region A locked American release. It's region ABC & has no subtitles.

The German version is about 20 minutes shorter though.

Ah, you're right. I hoped it was a mistake on the box, but I checked the disc & it is 20 minutes shorter, but it has all the scenes I remember. Oh well, I rescind my recommendation!

The explanation is really pretty lame though, it might fill a little gap but it wasn't one that really needed filling. And the morgue line is still in the theatrical cut, they just used a different take in the PPV version. You can check all the differences here - http://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=467894

German steelbook of The American seems to have some nice bonus material:

I got this a while ago because it was very cheap at the time. If you like the film, the artwork looks much better than the amaray to me. Its an upside-down spine which is a bit irritating but it was well worth the 10euros I paid for it - I got Repo Men (thats Men not Man!) steelbook for 10euros at the same time and thats very nice too.
