Those do look gorgeous. I'm very tempted to double dip as it's one of my top 5 Hammers and with these extras and the slight sync issues the UK disc, this will probably be the definitive edition.

What do you think? Isn’t our version of the artwork (the one on the right) much more appealing than the old one?

It's better indeed. The head of Frankenstein's monster isn't cut off, you get a clearer look at the laboratory and the color is more in sync with the overall look and the mood of the film itself. I like it.

The colour on the left one is a tad bright but I prefer it to the faded look of the other one.

I prefer te new one. It's way better balanced and framed for one.

Will it be the same master as the UK BD used? That looks quite dated and a little smeary to me so if it can be improved upon it's another one I'd gladly rebuy.

Here's hoping you'll be doing Brides of Dracula and Kiss of the Vampire with different masters.

Honestly I don't know. But I will have screenshots in a couple of days. So you can check them against the UK disc.

The one on the right is much better, the colors are not as garish as the one on the left. As the blob noted, it is also framed better. Just wish we could get these released in the USA.

Hey, does anybody else share my opinion that it is about time we devote our attention to one of most beloved horror icon: Frankenstein’s monster?

OK, we all know this is simply a rhetorical question

The fact alone that Peter Cushing reprises his role as Baron Frankenstein makes this movie a must-have to all horrorfilm-fans. Fans of the Hammer studios have already charged their Flux Compensator, travelled 30 days ahead and bought their copy months ago

I’m pretty sure everybody here knows the film in detail, so let’s skip forward to the presentation:

Packaging: Mediabook & Softbox

Catalogue-No MB A: 37031
Catalogue-No MB B: 37032
Catalogue-No Softbox: 37033

EAN-Code MB Cover A: 404 1036 37031 2
EAN-Code MB Cover B: 404 1036 37032 9
EAN-Code Softbox: 404 1036 37033 6

Aspect Ratio: High Definition Widescreen (16:9 1,78:1) 1920x1080p
Sound: German DTS HD-MA 2.0 Mono / English DTS HD-MA 2.0 Stereo
Subtitles: German (removeable)
Duration: 86 min. (24fps)

Bonus:

Audiocommentary by Dr. Rolf Giesen and Volker Kronz (German language, no subs) / Making Of „The Evil of Frankenstein“ / Uwe Sommerlad in conversation with Caron Gardner (38 min.) / A Moment with Caron Gardner / US Trailer / Additional Scenes from the US TV-version (13 min.) / German advertising flyer/ US advertising flyer / Filmprogram / 2 picture galleries

Inkl. 28 -page booklet written by Dr. Rolf Giesen and Uwe Sommerlad (german only). Exklusively included in the Mediabook.

We would especially like to thank Christine Marshall, who had her 16mm print of the tv-scenes transferred for us.

The street date is the 29th of May and during the next week the discs should available for pre-order.

The scenes shot for the TV version are a nice bonus!

It's tempting to dump the UK version for the extras alone, especially the TV scenes as I'm sure the PQ will be at least as good. All the UK extras seem to be on this as well.

Stereo? 1.78?

Surely the correct specs should be mono and 1.66 (as per UK theatrical release; I know it was matted to 1.85 for US screens)?

Also, any chance of Satanic Rites of Dracula somewhere down the line?

I'm guessing a typo in the audio specs but in this case 1.85:1 would be fine as it was a Universal co-production.

I don't think Universal were involved in the actual production(s). They just had an on-going distribution deal with hammer (as did several other companies). The films were released theatrically at a 1.85 ratio in the US so that ratio here wouldn't be a home video disaster (one would assume that the DP allowed for matting between 1.66 and 1.85). Anything more than 1.85 would be too much. The original 1.66 would be the ideal.

Stereo is definitly a typo that is already corrected on the packaging. I used old data for this post. The aspect ratio info is correct, though. It is the master that we got from Universal.

We are working hard to be able to include this title in our our Hammer series, but it is difficult. So no promises.

On the other hand: We already have 23 titles planned in which will keep us busy until the end of 2017. And I'm working on a solution for 5 more titles where we have the rights, but the master situation is unsatisfactory. So even without SATANIC RITES this will be a huge task.

The one good thing about Satanic Rites is that if you can actually track down who owns it in Germany you should be able to licence it.

I have the very early Anchor Bay non anamorphic US dvd of the movie and as far as I can tell that is the only official disc release of the movie anywhere in the world.
Lots of public domain US rubbish but after 15 years clearly nobody is in a rush to bring it out so I would urge you to persevere as a Bluray would be a real coup for Satanic Rites

I figured that might be the case.
I'm not even sure if this one has ever been released OAR.
I think in the USA Universal overmatted all their flat Hammer acquisitions to fit 1.85 screens.
Some erroneously to 2.0, as seen on the Hammer Franchise Coll., but 1.78 or 1.85 shouldn't be too bad here.

At least you guys are trying... Satanic Rites has dropped into the public domain in the USA because of a rights loophole (the theatrical distributor went bust). You would think that the rights would've reverted to Warner Bros. (indeed some international prints still contain their copyright) but perhaps not? I don't envy you the task of sorting this one out. Probably the best we could hope for is the UK cinema version, since I don't believe the uncut print has ever been shown anywhere. Shame.

As promised I had our authoring studio send over some screenshots so you can get an impression on the AC and the overall quality.

I already took a glimpse at the Blu-ray and I am pretty much satisfied. Then again, I am biased

Have a great sunday!

It never ceases to amaze me to see older films like this in true HD (just look at the fringes of the bandages). Thanks again Ivo for all the hard work.

I'd much rather priority was given to titles not available elsewhere.
