If we have to watch a 3D movie in 2D, the least they could do is provide us with a longer cut if available. First G.I. Joe Retaliation, now this one. *sigh*

In these cases the theatrical cut is the director's cut and the extended is just extra for home video.

That might not be always entirely the case I think.

You see when it comes to extended versions, I only really care about footage that has been either altered, edited or completely cut for ratings purposes. Which in my book is a form of (self) censorship because certain things are being toned down or completely cut out for the sake of a lower rating.

I think it's fair to say for both movies in this case, some of the footage that was cut from the theatrical versions probably had to do with ratings issues. And even if for some reason it didn't, I still always prefer a more violent and/or bloodier version if it excists.

For example the so called unrated version of the first Underworld movie does not really interest me. But the unrated cut of World War Z does because it's the violence that has been toned down in that one.

I will be very surprised if the UHD is actually theatrical, since, if i recall correctly, the Blu-ray is ONLY the unrated cut, with the theatrical only being available on DVD.

The unrated cut is massively superior here. It’s not just extra gore, it’s totally different editing. It breathes differently and feels much more organic. No way will I buy the UHD if it’s not included.

They'll cut for time and unnecessary scenes that are redundant, slow the pacing or whatever the case may be.

On some films I like extended cuts and others I prefer the theatrical. It just really depends.

As was said earlier, the unrated version is more likely to remain as it was and the theatrical cut will get a UHD treatment. I don't like it, but I understand it.

Loved this movie. So odd people bash it, even people who never saw it. It's exactly the movie it wants to be and an excellent job at it. Without the unrated cut it's useless though, so no upgrade for me unless it says Extended Cut at the top.

It's kind of weird how much they cut out of the theatrical cut anyway since they weren't trying for PG-13 and it's not like 9 less minutes would have given them any more screenings. Maybe they wanted to save money by not having to convert the extra footage to 3D?

Make of this what you will:

However, in Germany:

Personally, I trust the German Universal site more, that the extended cut is on Blu-ray and the UHD Blu-ray is theatrical only.

I'm already expecting this to be the theatrical cut only. But I still need it on UHD, especially since I love this movie so much. Still too bad it's highly likely not the extended, that would have made it a little easier watching it in plain old 2D...

I'm not sure what version I watched since I rented it from Redbox many years ago.

I'd consider an import if the price was right. Any reviews on PQ/AQ?

Japan seems to think they will get the extended cut. In fact, it seems they only ever got the theatrical cut on DVD (and on Blu-ray 3D as part of the Amazon.co.jp Exclusive 2D/3D SteelBook):

Huh, I didn't see this thread until now.

I hated the trailer for this movie.
But, I'm willing to give anything a try, and decided to give this one a go.

Glad I did! It was directly in line with the way a movie of this type should be - silly, fun, not insultingly stupid, nor does it try to be heavy on self-indulgence, or think it's something more than what it is.

Thumbs up in my book!

If that's true then this really would be worth getting for me. I already pre-ordered the UK release. Will keep an eye out whether or not the Japanese disc is indeed extended.
