Having The Rook save Sly's life is crucial to the relationship between the two men - once friends, now bitter enemies.

Early on The Rook threatens to drop Sly over a cliff, now he saves him. It's more than just violence, it's character development through action.

And to substitute it for a silly Sly-don't-need-no-help re-edit was a huge mistake.
I actually think Rooker's character is more of a hero and a bigger badass than Stallone in this!

Agreed. The workprint I found was as close to being unwatchable as anything I've seen, but I'm glad I suffered through the quality because the differences between it and the theatrical cut are significant. The workprint version is a huge improvement over the already-decent R-rated cut.

The only way I'd ever subject myself to CLIFFHANGER again is if the longer cut surfaces in HD (or even a decent-looking SD release). Knowing how good the film can be in its longer version, I could never go back to the shorter cut. I feel similarly about the KILL BILL movies, having seen the uncensored Japanese DVDs. Additionally, I'm never watching the sub-par COBRA again until the uncut version arrives on video... and if that never happens, then I'll never see it again.

Wasn't there an issue with the DTS-HD Master Track with that edition though? I remember something about reveresed Surround channels or something along those lines.

Cut or uncut? That is apparently the question.

As to where I stand on the whole subject, I am for the cut version that was shown theatrically. Since I've only seen the movie once in theaters it's the only version I know. Sometimes extended cuts and what not work wonders (i'm looking at you Batman v Superman). Oftentimes, they're just fluff and nothing to the movie. Hence the reason they were cut.

Yep. Dunno if they ever fixed it.

I hear you, but in the case of CLIFFHANGER it's the difference between a relatively tame but admittedly entertaining R-rated movie and a shockingly bloody, mean-spirited NC-17 action flick. I'll gladly take the latter, but if they're really nice they'll include both, maybe via seamless branching. Something tells me the uncut version will never surface, though. Studios love to discard the footage they cut to get an R-rating.

I'd hardly call the theatrical version "tame." Tamer than the workprint? Sure. But it's still pretty damn vicious.

indeed, this is one of the more violent big budget action films of it's era.

I'm fine the way it is and can't wait to upgrade this to 4k as it's a favorite of mine!

I remember the film as a staple on Cable TV 20 odd years ago, but it sounds like its time to revisit the film, and perhaps add it to my movie collection.

Absolutely agreed. One of the most aggressively violent action films ever made. I've seen the workprint version too and it's insanely violent and unsettling (and is even better IMO) that it's shocking. What also stands out in the director's cut is the different score. It's a very unsettling score and just makes the film even darker with the stronger violence. I absolutely love the theatrical version along with it's score but I also really badly want the director's cut on blu.

I read recently that Stallone stated that the director's cut tested very poorly due to some of the stunts which people thought were too unrealistic and probably due to the extremely dark tone and that people are probably better off with the theatrical cut. Personally I don't agree and feel it should be released.

Preorder link no longer works, and it hasn't appeared on other sites (as of yet). Wonder if it got delayed.

Very interesting things about the original uncut version of Cliffhanger. I knew it was censored back in the day in order to get an R-rating, but I never knew it was that badly cut/altered.

It's these kind of censorship issues that really annoy me. The list of movies that fell victim to the MPAA is endless...

We really need to stop calling theatrical releases "cut." Almost every single action movie is cut behind the scenes to reach a rating. That doesn't mean every action movie without an unrated extended edition on home video is "cut."

I'd love to see an uncut version, similar to RoboCop. But I don't think it will ever happen.

agreed... either that or just call every movie "cut" ... since all movies have scenes that end up on the cutting room floor..... (including director's versions....)
