I'll probably grab this one for the sake of being a completist... But Zavvi lists it as being sold out, which is odd. Hope that doesn't mean it's being cancelled.

Also listed in Germany, which is hopefully a good sign that it is coming:

So the US release for this looks cancelled, but it's an interesting situation, because this film made literally 97% of its $143 million box office outside the US and Canada. Box Office Mojo claims the film only opened in 552 theatres here, and I can attest that promotion was virtually non-existent.

Obviously, this film is distributed by Universal worldwide and it isn't likely to win any prestigious awards, so the closest example to it in terms of UHD Blu-ray might be The Snowman, which Universal made available for pre-order and then pulled worldwide last year. That film actually made $2 million more here than Johnny English Strikes Again, BUT, despite making almost 85% of its box office overseas, that film had a terrible box office take worldwide, and finished with a pathetic $43 million worldwide (on a $35 million budget), which is basically $100 million less than Johnny English Strikes Again, a film with a budget of $25 million.

So, all of this begs the question: Will we see the first Universal UHD Blu-ray that does not get released in the US and Canada? Somewhat surprisingly, I don't believe there is such a thing, yet, as even titles that were released overseas first eventually came out in the US and Canada later, though in those cases, the films were US productions that were also successful domestically.

Personally, I hope Johnny English Strikes Again does see an international release even if it is truly cancelled in the US/Canada. There is certainly plenty of precedent for Universal doing this on Blu-ray, and I would hope that the foreign total is healthy enough that the film gets its shot on the format.

EDIT: Actually, it seems that if our Wish List forum is correct, then the only Universal UHD cancelled so far has been The Snowman. I would feel a little better if they had never put up a US pre-order as opposed to putting it up and then cancelling it, but as I say, hopefully the international box office is enough to make this happen.

I e-mailed Universal UK regarding the UK UHD Blu-ray, and have just received this response:

Quote:
Dear McCrutchy,

Thank you for your e-mail.

We can confirm the UK will be releasing Johnny English Strikes Again on 4K Ultra HD.

Kind regards,

that's fascinating since I needed to fill in my third reservation of the week of my A-List membership to see something and this sounded decent ~ sadly I fell asleep on it, will rent it to see what I missed (apparently most of the ending) "wah-wha"

I refused to see it here because I knew it would get banished to the tiny screens at my local multiplex. To be honest, I really don't remember the first two films very much, but I recall them being fun, funny, easily digestible films, and all signs are that I should enjoy the new entry. I did purchase the Blu-ray double-pack of the first two films, and had intended to watch them leading up to the cinema release of the third, but when I didn't see any trailers or TV spots for it (I don't even think I've seen the trailer in a theater), I then knew that the film would get a politely minimal release owing solely to it being a Bond spoof distributed by a major like Universal, so my plan now is to wait for the UK UHD/Blu-ray combo pack, and watch it at home.

Universal have seemingly finalized the German cover:

It's very irritating that Amazon still don't show the release date for the UK edition (supposedly 18 February) yet.

Amazon finally loaded in the release date of 18 February for the UK. So pleased this can be released by a Hollywood major without being dependent on the US market.

I still feel weird spending so much money to buy a film like this in 4K... But whatever.

Really disappointed they didn’t take the opportunity to bring the first film (a classic IMO, Atkinson on peak form) to 4K (and why not the second film too, for the sake of a boxset)... Can’t bring myself to buy this 4K release without a massive discount, seeing as it’s a standalone.

Speaking of a massive discount, I couldn't stop myself from buying this and Hellboy II in the 2 for Ł20 offer at zoom last week. JESA is hardly a modern classic but it's innocent enough fun, a lot of other comedians would've gone the gross-out route by now but all Atkinson has to do is start gurning and I start cracking up. I liked the shapes he was throwing in the dance floor bit too.

And what of the UHD, given the consensus from some that smaller movies made for peanuts won't carry HDR and that even if they did it wouldn't be much cop? The HDR is excellent! Genuine expansion of dynamic range where the SDR version just nukes the highlights and it adds a beautiful touch of breadth to the colour gamut. As usual it also gives the imagery a sense of tangible 'depth' that the SDR version struggles to match.

Detail is interesting though, the 1080p BD appears to be the sharper of the two while the 2160p UHD appears smoother, and yet on closer inspection there's a wee bit of ringing on the 1080p so I'd say it's been sharpened up a tad while the UHD, if anything, has had a fraction of the sensor noise filtered off. It looks less harsh as a result and still has some terrific detail in there, combined with the HDR it looks pretty darned nice overall. Black levels have been thinned out on the UHD, the BD goes a fair bit denser but because of the HDR you never feel like the UHD is lacking for contrast.

Took a few snaps, as per usual THEY ARE NOT TO BE TAKEN AS 100% GOSPEL but they give a fair idea of what I'm seeing. First one is JE getting kitted out upon his return to MI7, the colour is more robust in HDR and while those lighting panels above look nice and bright in the SDR (brighter than the photo suggests) they're almost completely blown out whereas the HDR resolves more information:

JE about to pick up the red Aston, look at how the lighting is so much more flatter in SDR

Last one, this is from the classroom bit at the end of the film, again lots more highlight detail visible through the windows and better colour retention as a result

YES. Just the post I needed, Geoff. Funnily enough I was searching for a good deal on this earlier last week, and was amazed that not a single person had posted here about it since my post in January and its February release.

JE was my favourite comedy when young, watched it so much I literally knew (correction: still know) and could recite all the dialogue (all of it ), completely oblivious to the fact that it was written by none other than Purvis & Wade, purveyors of 007 since 1999. Owning none on blu-ray, I almost fell for the BD 3-movie collection last week but instead ordered the 2-movie collection for Ł4 and resolved to get the third on 4K as soon as it dropped in price. Unfortunately Zoom still don't deliver to Switzerland so that wasn't an option. With your positive review I may cave in on Amazon sooner rather than later.

So glad this looks good. I'm still mourning the missed opportunity of the original JE though; it could have soared on 4K given the right treatment, and I can't see any future justifications for it on the horizon

Quick (non-priority) question, does it include a digital code? There's conflicting artwork:

Yes, it came with a code and a slipcover. The slip mentions the code, the inner cover does not which is why there are two cover art versions ^ floating about, they're both legit.
