Apparently, The Mystery of Mamo won't have the original mono mix and there are already concerns that it would be heavily DNR'd or upscaled by Q-Tec.
I really hope a miracle happens and they will announce at the last minute that The Castle of Cagliostro will be a Ghibli release rather than a VAP release.

And even better if it's with Ghibli, since the 4K releases of Mary and the Witch's Flower and Innocence (both by Walt Disney Japan, which also does the Ghibli releases in Japan) were triple-layer, English subtitles and had HDR10+ before Fox could release a UHD with HDR10+.

Also, the page for The Castle of Cagliostro in Disney Japan's website is still up:

This UHD has already been confirmed to be a VAP release; I don’t see how a Ghibli/Disney release would make it better since the remaster was already fairly grain managed. Where have you read that Mano won’t include the mono mix? “Innocence” is a terrible example because it looks like complete ass.

This dude doesn’t do any research and just takes stuff that’s already been said and repeats it.

From the Japanese Amazon page. As a Japanese speaker it says, “Japanese Linear PCM Stereo 2.0/5.1 2017 Remix”

So, maybe dual mono? Who knows.

Some details of the disc:
Quote:
Following Lupin the Third: Lupin vs. the Clone released today in Japan, Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro will get its 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray from VAP at 8,424 yen (about 75.5 US dollars) on July 24, 2019. The disc will also include a comparison clip between 4K HDR and 4K SDR, TV spots for the film, and come with a special booklet.

As the second feature film from the Lupin The Third anime franchise, Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro was released in Japan on December 15, 1979. It was the first feature film work for Hayao Miyazaki, who served as co-director for the second half of the first Lupin the Third TV anime series in 1971-1972, alongside the late Isao Takahata. The 100-minute film achieved a modest box office success with 610 million yen upon its initial release. However, it has been considered as one of the masterpieces in Japanese anime history.

It's 99.99% likely to be the DNR'd to hell mess like the other TMS UHDs, but at least the artwork is nice...

To be fair, the Ghibli/Discotek Blu was already fairly grain managed

Sure, but it at least had no apparent loss in detail. You can remove grain and keep detail if you know what you're doing, but it's a risky move. We both agree on keeping it, but that BD shows it can be done well for anime.

Any word on subtitles yet? I’d love to import this release.

If it’s anything like “Mamo” then there won’t be any English subs.

This movie is sorely tempting, even at this retail price. Overzealous DNR makes it easy to fall off on the "no" side of the fence, though.

DNR and lacking of Eng subtitles would make this release useless for me.

I will only buy it if it has English subtitles. If it does than I am definitely getting it.

I love the film too, but do you want a smeary DNR'd to death release?

I realise the previous release was pretty grain handled, but at least the techniques used didn't remove any major detail- if this is like the Mamo UHD, it's pure horror.

I’m still gonna get it because I’m a crazy man and I’ve seen the film enough times to know most of it by heart.

I actually might too. I hope it's not as bad as Mamo, but who knows- might be even worse.

Um... it doesn't look as bad as Mamo's UHD, but those are not high standards at all to meet... so yeah, it's just as de-grained as we expected...
