I'm still not sure it's ever going to be 100% perfect for the Leone ultra fans - says the nitpicker's nitpicker - but this is great news indeed. That they're spending the money to do HDR regrades is a very welcome bonus.

I lost track of these a while back, has there been a consistent set of transfers released for the trilogy or are they all still pulled from different sources? Also that kind of makes it sound like they're regrading from the already graded SDR master, not a great starting point for HDR so I hope they don't try go crazy with it.

Well, for Kino, they used the MGM remastered master for their release and Fistful and Dollars More were new-to-Blu masters. If that's what you're asking for "consistent set".

kino's release of the TGTBTU looked bad, so hopefully the 4k is better

KL - Don't forget to talk to murch13 here on the forum. He is one of the few on this planet that knows how to assemble it properly and what the colors should be.

They don't need new scans. The scans are great. It's the color grading of those scans (for 1 and 3) that are awful and incorrect. Learn the different between scans and masters.

No one's ever said 4K is dying. 4k is thriving and the future... just not on physical disc, which is less than 5% of the total media market share. You should be more clear when you try to make a point if you want to, you know, make a point.

Well, assuming the colors are right, this will be the last version we'll ever need of these. I doubt anything higher than 4K would reveal any further detail considering the type of stock they were filmed on.

This is good news for the 4k crowd, and I know they said from the get go that they wouldn't be redoing these for blu, but, damn it still sucks. Even Shout! Factory redid their botched Bruce Lee releases and soon after they released the initial botched blu/DVD set. Is it really that hard to repress some blus with better color correction?

If Criterion can stoop to consulting HK film aficionados when putting together their Police Story set then surely Kino could swallow their pride and do the same? But if all the Kino staff have the same winning personality as KLI then they'd rather set fire to their hair than listen to one of the great unwashed.

Ah yes! The physical media is dying/dead thing. Tell that to the 8-track which has made a comeback. Small as it is, it's still a comeback. Shocking right?! Is physical media such as 4K going to be a niche market? Yes. What is wrong that? there are a lot of niche physical products out there doing very well. 4K will just be another one. Not to mention the fact that studios don't make that much from streaming (which is where we seem to be heading according to some). Musicians don't make squat from streaming either. Why do you think studios are doing their own streaming services? Look, if one of the biggest bombs in Hollywood history can get a 4K release and a firm date for said release than physical media is going nowhere. You may not like physical media and that's cool. But there are plenty that still do.
