After having 2 days of listening to the new album disc 2 has quite a bit going on. I'm starting to pick up on arrangements and sections that didn;t stand out upon first listen.
Confusion, Am I Savage?, and some small parts of Murder One have this Alice in Chains feel going on. Reminiscent of their Dirt album. ManUNkind sounds like a long lost Black Sabbath song on steriods from Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Has a Sabbra Cadabbra, Hole in the Sky vibe. |

My Amazon order had been saying the expected shipping date was 11/16, but I cancelled the order yesterday when it didn't ship and will head into Best Buy and pick it up after work.
I've listened to some of each song on Spotify and I'm also finding it a bit of a "mixed bag". I really, REALLY dig "Moth Into Flame" and "Now That We're Dead"; am liking "Atlas, Rise!" more and more every time I listen to it, and I think there's some good stuff with a couple of the other tracks (which I don't have memorized yet, unfortunately), but felt a bit "let down" at "Spit Out the Bone". Now, I understand that a lot of people like it, and that's all good, but it's just not hitting with me I guess. But hey, for $10, if I get a couple of songs that I really, really, love then that's all good in my book. |

I've listened to it all the way through twice now (and the bonus tracks once...Fade to Black is such a great song!) and right now I'm gravitating more towards the first 6 songs. Which means now I'm gonna have to go back and listen to disc 2 and see what I missed the first couple times around. Overall I can see myself liking this one a little bit more than Death Magnetic, but gonna have to give it a few more passes. From a long-time fan, I'm pleased. Nothing mind-blowing or anything, but a solid album from a band that's been going almost as long as I've been alive.

I cannot listen to albums 1-5 anymore because i wore them out back in the day, which leaves me in a odd place.
A lot of this record is pretty good, and some not so great. Shorter songs would have helped i think. And some dynamic range! Still, for old geezers.. 6/10 Edit: Hetfield's voice hasn't sounded this strong in awhile. Some nice screams and i don't think i heard one oooh or ahhh.. thank Thor. Got my copy from Best Buy in the mail yesterday and it was destroyed. I mean in a million pieces destroyed. Chips and scratches on the CDs, plastic from case in slivers. The package looks like a truck ran over it and it was all in a nice plastic bag with an apology from the USPS.

When I first heard the entire album this song was my least favorite. But now I can't get enough of it. Slow burner but it just has a killer grove. Also one of Hammet's better solos on the album. Not sure if it's the video or what but this song just kills now. The video is a nice tribute to Lemmy Kilmister.

As for the rankings:
Load & ReLoad (the only two I am still listening from the beginning to the end) Black Album (5 or 6 great songs, the rest ok to not bad) Ride The Lightning (5 good songs, 3 not so much) Master of Puppets (I like the first half of the album + Orion) ...and Justice for All (doesn't like the sound of it, just two really memorable songs for me + To Live is to Die) Kill'em All (doesnt like Hetfield's vocals here, I prefer live versions of those songs) and nothing else matters :P Last three albums are boring, I like only two songs from Death Magnetic, two from St.Anger are not bad, and nothing from Hardwired made me want to hear it again. Picked up the deluxe edition from FYE yesterday. Missed out on the $9.99 deal, but $14.99 is still not bad. Really digging what I'm hearing so far. I haven't been excited about a new Metallica album since the Load/Reload albums, but this is pretty solid stuff. I often wonder if it would help/hurt the band if they had an "great" drummer. Lars is very limited in his abilities.

From a sound standpoint it would help them tremendously. Both live and in the Studio. But Lars contributes a lot to the band (always has) beyond his drumming. Writing, arranging, etc. Metallica wouldn't be Metallica without Lars behind the scenes doing his thing.

Got my copy in the mail.
Appears to have gotten here in one piece unlike that other guy who ordered a copy from Best Buy. EDIT: Been listening to it after finishing ROTLD 3. Easily the Bay Area Thrasher's strongest album in a long time. They've finally rectified the problems with their albums from Justice onward and actually made a long album full of long songs where the songwriting is strong enough to warrant the lengthy running time. I have a good feeling their experience on working with Lou Reed on the Lulu collaboration (an album many LOATHE, but I will totally defend as a great last hurrah on Lou's part and a great revitalization to Metallica's creative juices) really had a hand in why this album sounds so damn good. Those two, and "Confusion" are my 3 favorites. I'm quite liking the album as a whole, but those 3 in particular stood out to me. Like you said, for $10 and 3 discs of content, I'm more than satisfied.
