After a while you just run out of ideas.
Tough part about this is that if they changed everything up, they can potentially alienate half, or more, of their fan base. Fans complain the new stuff doesn't sound like the old stuff, other fans say it's not different enough but hated when they put out Load/Re-Load (even 'black'). I guess my question is what do you (fans) need from them to make you go 'wow'? No hate intended, just pure curiosity. IMHO, I haven't heard a track from them like 'Atlas, Rise!' in a while and went 'WOW' when i heard it, they've got a nice little Maiden-esque sound going on. I'm excited, this stuff sounds good!

I love it when the time honored 'What's up with Metallica's sound/style/artwork/personal hygiene' debate can be refueled!

I'm just happy a bunch of 50 year old dudes are putting out some good stuff and haven't called it quits. And lets all admit, anything that Metallica puts out is better than half the crap on the radio.

On first listen gotta say Dream No More, Halo on Fire, Spit Out The Bone Stood out to me the most. Sounds different then what they've done before.

I'm forcing myself to not listen to the leak or any other songs until it hits my door.

Off topic of sorts but anyone who lives in the Bay Area or wouldn't mind traveling to San Francisco area, Metallica is playing a small venue on Dec.17 and tickets go on sale 10am on Nov. 18th. The venue is the Fox Theater in Oakland.

So my Deluxe disc came in today. I just realized they re-did Lords of Summer. Remastered with altered sections and altered lyrics.

Over the past week or so, I've been revisiting all their albums in anticipation for Hardwired... to Self-Destruct.

Never realized until now just how big a downgrade the Black Album is when compared to the first four classics.

I like the Black album and it's a masterpiece compared to their work in recent years. I found Death Magnetic to be a horrible album and my least favorite by far of their catalog.

You dislike it more than St. Anger? That's the only Metallica album that I have zero interest listening to ever again. I got into the band around And Justice for All. Went back and listened to the previous albums and was obsessed with Master of Puppets mostly. By the time the Black Album came out it was weird to me, but I grew to love it for what it was. Load and Re-Load were more of the same radio-oriented departure for them, but I grew to really like a few songs on those as well. I just remember being absolutely gutted the first time I heard St. Anger. I bought the CD before having heard any of it and I couldn't believe what I was listening to. I literally cringed. After that, I was super hesitant to even listen to Death Magnetic. While not a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, it had a lot of qualities I enjoyed from 90's era Metallica. I can go back and listen to pretty much any of their albums front to back, except St. Anger.

(All of that to say that it's your opinion and I respect it. Mine just differs. )

I can totally respect your opinion on it. It would be boring if we were all the same. I actually did like St Anger more than DM, and I will agree that the Black album was a departure from Justice, Puppets, etc. but I still enjoy the hell out of the album. With that being said, Justice and Puppets are hands down my favorite albums from Metallica, and I love listening to them on vinyl.

I do really like the Black Album, it does have some very solid tracks (Enter Sandman, Sad But True, The Unforgiven, Wherever I May Roam, Nothing Else Matters), but there is a lot of filler too (Holier Than Thou, Don't Tread on Me, Through the Never, My Friend of Misery, The Struggle Within). The earlier albums had no filler with the exception of Escape on Ride the Lightning and maybe one or two tracks on ...And Justice for All.

I wouldn't call any of their albums terrible except from St. Anger which is absolutely abysmal. Despite the flak it gets, I'd say Load is almost as good as the Black Album although it also suffers from the same problem. Reload is mediocre and Death Magnetic has some great tracks (The Day that Never Comes, All Nightmare Long, Suicide & Redemption) and the only truly bad track on it is My Apocalypse.

Not sure where Hardwired... to Self-Destruct is going to fare. The first three tracks that were released had me hyped, but I've been listening to some of the latest ones on YouTube and they've been decreasing my excitement levels.

I enjoy each Metallica album and besides the three singles I have decided to wait to listen to the rest as a whole.

St. Anger

UO: The song "St. Anger" is better than anything post Black album. The album doesn't live up to that standard of course, but blistering song, trash can snare drum and all.

I actually think St. Anger is one of their best albums. It has some great riffs and songs that are even used in national sports games. It was a different direction. I even went into it thinking I would dislike it because it didn't have solos. It has some strong songs on there "St. Anger", "Some Kind of Monster" and "Frantic". To me, my least favorite album is Reload. It only had 3 good songs and one was a rehash. Sometimes I think people tend to go with a general consensus instead of having independent thought or dealing with backlash for a certain view.

Around year 2000 Metallica was my favourite band, I still like everything they've released in 80s/90s (especially 90s) without exceptions (probably AJFA and Kill'em All were my least favourite), and now we have third album in a row that I am unable to listen from the beginning to the end...

I tried to like St.Anger, but I just couldn't. Death Magnetic was so boring and forgettable, and it looks like the new one is even worse...
