Default The Thread About All Things Macross

I figured we could have one thread on all things Macross on Blu-ray.

I just ordered Frontier disc 6 because I've watched the first two episodes and found it to be very good. I hope to get the original one day, but I don't feel like I'm missing much, watching Frontier.

As for Plus, I'm thinking of just getting the Italian Dynit release soon. The Japanese release does have subs (EDIT: only on the movie!), but the price is just so darn high for four episodes.

By the way, I didn't create this thread with farting in Harmony Gold's general direction in mind. I wanted a thread dedicated to we unfortunate westerners seeking solutions to watching Macross on Blu-ray.

Soon, I should be able to supply full subtitles for Frontier, in both fancy .ass form for computer-watching and such, and simple .srt for use with, for example, an Oppo BD player like mine. It's kind of finicky and doesn't like fancy formatting.

I really regret not getting that Japanese Macross Plus boxset from a few years back.

I'm super happy I got the subbed Macross Frontier set with the art books a few months ago.

I got the Macross Plus release, and while there are English subs they aren't that great. The dub is okay, but it is a mid-90's voice over that's kinda generic.

What a coincidence, since I just got a new blu-ray player and made it region free I decided to see how my old Do You Remember Love R2 DVD looks on my 4K big screen. Surprisingly it looked really good, only in the quick motion scenes did it have problems. Got to love how well the Japanese author they're discs. I'll try it on my plasma later since that handles motion more smoothly.

^While the Japanese do seem to be able to author good discs, the 2016 Macross DYRL Blu-ray is not one of those. When I watched it I noticed a few moments in which the encoder couldn't seem to handle the grain.

To soften the blow, it's technically four episodes and a movie compiling those four episodes.

Macross is pricey, but so worth it. It's my goal next year to get the original series on Blu-ray and perhaps Delta too if vol 1, 4 and 7 still come with storage boxes.

I'm not interested in compilation movies I don't think I have a single one, actually.

The set with the two movies. The movies aren't a compilation, but a different take on the Frontier series with heavy alterations.

For my first post in this thread, I'll just say that Do You Remember Love is one of the most gorgeously animated films of all time.

I know about that one. It wasn't clear that's what he meant, though

The Macross Plus Movie Edition is actually a different take on the material rather than a straight compilation, and it contains new scenes, animation tweaks, and a new song. I tend to favor the first three OVA episodes, but the movie has a stronger conclusion.

The Blu-ray box wasn't that expensive when it came out, but it was a limited edition that went OOP.

I wasn't aware that the 2016 Macross: DYRL Blu-ray has PQ issues. I have the previous BD, and aside from some shots that are out of focus (and the censored gore), I'm happy with it.

I was exaggerating a bit about the compression issues. I gave the disc a second spin just now and while there are some compression issues, they weren't that very bad or noticeable, especially in motion and with the grain on screen. The most concerning PQ issue IMO isn't the compression, but the use of sharpening to "fix" some of the out of focus scenes, but I can live with that.

I can't find the quote right now, but I'm sure it was in something like an old issue of Animerica where Shoji Kawamori stated that the movie version is not only his preferred version but what he wanted to do to begin with. He wanted a movie from the drop but had to make the OVA version instead for some reason. I know Wikipedia states that Keiko Nobumoto wrote it as a film which then evolved into an OVA, but the entry doesn't have any sources cited there. Still, it's not a standard compilation film.

I really gotta get caught up on Macross Delta. I think I'm afraid I'll hate it, and I don't like hating Macross.

In other news I might also be importing Macross 30 for PS3 soon, apparently the gameplay isn't too English-unfriendly.

I was thinking about importing Do You Remember Love from Japan, but the comments in this thread make me a bit wary.

Is there any hint of a new version on the horizon in Japan?
