I think he's referring to the new Bee Gees concert BD.

An "SD Blu-ray" is a Blu-ray that has SD (i.e. DVD) quality video, but typically has HD quality audio tracks.

I have never actually seen one but it makes sense that it is just a standard def bluray. this is one way that they would release old tv series onto bluray as most seasons would probably fit onto a single bluray disc.

That makes two concerts then. I bet they are from the same company.

We had this arrive at our store very recently and I was baffled because I'd never come across an SD Blu-ray before.

I would love to see TV shows currently not available on Blu-ray at least in the interim being offered on Blu-ray in SD quality where the entire season of a given show is offered on one Blu-ray disc. Sure would beat these 4-7 disc DVD boxsets of a given TV season.

Not too long ago in fact I re-authored "The X-Files: Seasons 1-9" creating one large DVD per season which includes simple DVD menus for selecting a given episode, each season fitting on one BD-R or BD-R/DL without any compression used. That's 9 Blu-ray discs for the entire TV show versus the 59 DVD's. Far more portable now obviously. Pics of the initial DVD menus I had worked up for season one shown below.

An SD Blu-ray is a Blu-ray release on which instead of a high-definition transfer you have a standard definition transfer. You still have lossless audio.

The reason is this:

Because the original content -- could be a concert, show, or a low-budget film - was shot on video (in this case in standard definition). What this means is that the original content cannot be presented in high-definition.

And yes, standard definition content on Blu-ray and standard definition content on DVD DO NOT LOOK THE SAME. Compression is far better on Blu-ray, as will naturally be the encoding, and you also get lossless audio.

All in all, you get the best possible presentation of the content on Blu-ray.

Most of them are upscales. By the same terminology, we should be calling 2K-upscaled UHD discs "2K UHD" discs.

This is a native SD Blu-ray. It has a resolution of 720x576 anamorphic.
