Saw this in theaters this afternoon. It’s alright, tries to do interesting things with the Hamlet mythos by adding new material (pretty much the whole first act is a prequel for instance) as well as reworking scenes right from the play, and some of it works much better than others. The acting and technical elements (even while clearly not a big budget movie) are pretty well done.

Ophelia appeared on Netflix so of course I had to check it out and I was pleasantly surprised and entertained.
Ophelia tells alternate story outside of the original source (Hamlet), strong marriage with Romeo & Juliet, with a touch of Macbeth. The original Hamlet story is unchanged but the background premises are significantly altered, to very entertaining effects. Both Ridley and Mackay (also in 1917) are both good in their roles. This is the second 'alternative' back stories branching out from Hamlet that I am aware of, first being the excellent/witty Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead. Ophelia is more than adequate at being a tangential story to the original Hamlet. As far as the role of Hamlet, I found Mackay's acting excellent, almost as good as Iain Glen and far superiour to Branagh (just way too old). For the Shakespeareans, Ophelia is a very good divulsion off the beaten path. It can clearly stand on it's own and enjoyed without knowing Hamlet. It fact I think it would be more fun as a first watch of a Shakespearean tale (!). 7/10. |
