Sounds about right for standard US Bluray cases. I have several Billy's and Besta units of various sizes in the house. 8in and 15 in depth Bestas (50.5 and 75 in tall) and the normal 11 in depthx 79in ht Billy's
The single Billy have shelves approx 14.25in, the double almost exactly 30in Out of the box they have a single fixed middle shelf and bottom shelf with 4 moveable shelves. 2 extra 'wood' shelves are easy to add for 8 shelf levels approx 9 inches in ht. The 30 inch shelf will hold 55-60 std 12-13mm cases pretty easily and the 14 inch around 25-28. Obviously the numbers change with 14mm UK cases or Scanavo/Criterion, Arrow style cases. I can max out around 66 Twilight Time 11.5-12mm cases on a 30 inch. If you really want to push things, you can switch to 8 moveable glass shelves but you'll have to add extra holes for the shelf supports to make the shelf ht equal ending up with 10 levels approx 7.25-7.5 in tall, but that eliminates DVD and some taller BD sets. |

For those with the 93" tall Billy, it comes with 6 shelves (7 if you count the bottom/fixed shelf). If you buy extra shelves, how many extra can you realistically fit and have properly fitting Blu-rays on every shelf? 1? 2?
Hope that question makes sense. My main issue with the Billy is I want even heights on all my shelves if possible. I don't want a row for instance that is too small to fit anything. That just irks me. Last edited by dcx4610; 08-16-2022 at 03:27 PM. |

I'm also curious if anybody has done anything clever with the extra depth space. The Billys are pretty deep and I had to have my blus sitting far back. Was curious if anybody has done anything like tilting the shelves or something. |

I'm not out of space yet but I'm probably just going to go custom shelves. I'm not looking forward to painting but at least you can go as big/deep/tall as you want. I've seen simple plans where you just anchor a 2x4 to the wall and then put a 1x2 on the front of that and use your wall as a backing. It's cheap and you can make it work. |

The weather stripping is a good idea. My fear then would be it would get dusty, but that's easy to remedy by just cleaning them annually or something.

I haven't given up on the Billy idea but I don't have an Ikea locally but it irks me that they don't have a solid black option. Just the black-brown.
With shipping + extra shelves, I bet it would be $1000ish. I really don't feel like making custom shelves but it would certainly be cheaper and would probably fit more movies. It's probably going to be hard to find something else pre-made that would go floor to ceiling like the Billy though which is why I'm still conisidering it. My current shelves are 74" high or so but have a lot of wasted top space. The Billy is 93" I believe and with the extra shelves, you could really fill it. I did see one "hack" where you buy foam pipe noodles and shove it in the back to push the movies forward. |

Envious of those who have the logistics for shelf storage. I've had to use boxes and bins the last few years and it's literally such a pain to move them around to look for movies.

If anyone is looking for cheap prefab media shelving, Walmart just dropped the price of the 60" Atlantic Elite shelves to $46.15 shipped, about $30 cheaper than anywhere else I've seen:
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Atlantic-...lack/631448152 Now these are cheap quality, but if you're careful building it and you mount to the wall as recommended, it is quite sturdy. I have the larger XL 72" height and have been quite pleased for the money. The shelf depth is perfect for blu-rays and cds. Too shallow to put box sets or other large objects on, but if you don't want the depth of a traditional bookshelf, these fit the bill. There are some building videos of the XL model on Youtube if you get stuck, as the instruction manual is... well... what you would expect. I picked up a couple of these $46 units for overflow, cuz why not at that price? |

I've tried and tried, but can't find a good DVD/BD cabinet with doors. Can kitchen fumes get through the keepcase plastic? Edit: No, can't do it. Just remembered all the grime on the slipcover of a book that was on top of the cabinet for a couple of months.
