Main reason why they probably still include DVDs in the LEs is so there's more disc art due to Blu-rays holding more data, so they use less discs than DVD-only releases did. 4 discs with artwork can be more appealing than just simply 2 discs with artwork. In some cases, the DVDs have been exclusive to the LE, so that may support my hypothesis even more.

I sell the DVD copy for new stuff. Can usually get $10-15 for it on eBay.

Excel Saga is one of the funniest anime ever. The parodies are so spot on. It even has some good meta jokes, like the jokes about Sailor Moon being told by Sailor Moon's voice actress.

Sucks when the dvd has better disc art than the bd

Don’t worry. You’ll be dead before that happens.

Crunchyroll no longer includes DVDs or digital copies unless the previous sets released from Funimation included them. For example, the new Attack on Titan sets include the DVDs because the Funimation sets included them.

I am pleased with this move as I always disliked the additional DVD discs (seems pointless to me - who would want to watch in standard definition when buying a Blu-ray?) and the digital copies removal makes perfect sense too (Crunchyroll has a streaming service, after all). I prefer releases that don't have any digital and that do not advertise including digital.

As a result, the cases are slimer, the package is less heavy, and more streamlined looking. The cover art and slips look better too without as much text/logos, etc. Crunchyroll made a good decision with this move. Crunchyroll also took a move from Discotek with alternate art on the slipcovers and different art on the sleeves (which is much nicer as well). Funimation releases usually didn't do this (or at least not as often).

It's interesting to me because I am not bothered at all by 4K UHD/Blu-ray combo packs (this makes perfect sense to me and I am surprised when 4K UHD discs are released without a Blu-ray disc actually) but it seems weird to include the DVDs with the Blu-ray.

Well many releases were originally released as Combo Packs Only so the DVD existed for the DVD users and the Blu-ray for the Blu-ray users. But the ones that did get a separate DVD-Only release with a Combo Pack release as well, the DVD Only version was for the DVD users and the Combo Packs for having the additional option so that you can take it anywhere like watch the DVD on a laptop that has a disc drive. But because of that it just feels like um ok how many people will do that? Some might but I doubt the majority of people would. Maybe on the big name companies like Disney, Warner, Fox, etc. but not as much with Anime.

FUNimation releases began to feature alternate artwork years ago (Ex: Astra Lost in Space released in August 2020), well before they bought Crunchyroll, though they almost always made the slipcover the key artwork years back which is boring and feels a bit lazy (the key art isn't always the best option). The graphic designers for the Crunchyroll releases are most likely the same people that have been doing the FUNimation releases for years, though it's hard to prove given they're almost never credited (way to thank them for their work...). They also began to go Blu-ray-only in 2018 after Sentai started to do so after DVD sales for anime had dropped to where it was becoming financially unviable to continue to release them, and years after Aniplex USA did (they began going Blu-ray-only in 2016). They were mainly doing combo packs still only for series that were first released that way or were first released on DVD (Ex: Basilisk) to maintain consistency (yeah, consistency, something FUNimation has a very poor track record of).

The combo packs for FUNimation originally came as a result of not wanting to do separate Blu-ray and DVD releases anymore, especially at a time when Blu-ray wasn't as profitable as DVD for anime (Ex: Ouran High School Host Club sold very well on DVD, but the Blu-ray in 2010 bombed, hard (confirmed by Adam Sheehan and Lance Heiskell in an old FUNimation ANNCast)).

The studios are getting a lot of feedback from retailers (like us) who are at the point where we don't want to stock two versions anymore, so the combo packs make sense as long as they are priced appropriately. It also helps reduce overstock returns when we misjudge the amount of one or the other format people will be interested in, and I can tell you, that's hard to pin down – it seems different for each title.

And let me say again, as long as they are priced appropriately, which means at the lower cost of the two.

The combo packs should be carrying the 'single' version price point. After inventory reduction and production savings, it really actually probably costs less to produce a combo pack than two seperate versions.

A reminder, FUNimation is the surviving company, and it has many of the same people running it as seen by the ending credits and 10-second end of disc credits screen. All that happened is Funimation Global Group was renamed Crunchyroll, LLC.

Super happy to finally get more Kaguya. I really wish they would rerelease s1 of this and Mahouka with the dub tho. At least it appears to match the first set.

Going to be funny to see how many people here that is the case for. I placed my order earlier and will take a picture when it arrives.

Here, just secretly use mine - the purple carpet shouldn't give anything away, right?

I actually can't believe they were able to coordinate matching slipboxes with the exact same cutout on all three, after all this time - They ain't no Funimation, thankfully!

I’ve had my copy of S1 since it came out. TOM still has 5 copies if anyone has point there to use towards it. Just remember shipping is like $16 there for a Blu-ray unless you’re over $150 after the use of the points.

Edit: Arifureta From Commonplace to World's Strongest Season 2 Limited Edtion Blu-ray/DVD just shipped as another single shipment from Rightstuf.
