This is Shout's first, in-house, full 4k restoration, right?
Really hope this is great. The sole experience I have with this company is a Brue Lee box set where they had to send new discs because they used the wrong masters. Please ease my mind & tell me they've improved since then? |

Lol, I didn't say that. Though I am very familiar with this cover and even this being exaggerated, I'd give Campbell the benefit of the doubt and say he could look like this IF he wanted.
The other cover? Never seen that before and Campbell ain't ever looking like that in a trillion years. I'd say this is excusable given Hamill did show some muscle later to the extent this is not unbelievable and Fisher showed a very attractive body later on as well. So I would say in the realm of hilariously misplaced marketing, the Bruce Campbell as Arnold definitely takes the cake. |

I remember seeing this poster all the time as a kid in the various video stores and retailers (e.g., Suncoast, Coconuts, Sam Goody, FYE, etc.). The early 90s were a treasure trove for the imagination as a child, especially with parents who were very restrictive of what I was allowed to watch. Based on the poster and back cover of the VHS, I would often imagine what the actual movie would be. Perhaps it was the young filmmaker in me, but I would visualize the entire film based on the few images I had. When I finally saw the films as I got older, I was often disappointed because the actual movie was lacking compared to the poster and movie I'd expected in my head. This was one of those movies based on this poster alone.
I do miss the creative nature of the late 80s/early 90s poster art. In my view, it was the high point for the industry and I loved how the VHS covers replicated the poster art. I wish we could restore some of that uniqueness and creativity with modern cover art. It's one of the reasons I'm also pleased to see Scream Factory use the original poster art for their two Carpenter UHD releases. Quote:

1. Floating heads or 2. Teal and orange color scheme or 3. Literally, image slapped on with some text - something you could make in Microsoft paint in like 30 seconds. These posters above, whatever you make of them, are genuine artwork - conveying a mystique, a message, selling an idea. Definitely effort went into them compared to what the summer interns churn out at big studios these days. |

![]() ![]() Most people buy tickets based on the actors' names, faces, and the movie title, so that what goes on the artwork. Posters are nothing but ads, even if we sometimes forget. The most beautiful ad that sells no merchandise is still a failure, even if we still love it years later. As the space age and modernism took hold, mid-century marketing began to switch more toward photography, especially as color printing became cheaper to do. If you look at the one sheet for All About Eve, it looks like something we'd whip up in the computer in 15 minutes with some screen caps. Yet, it's included in graphic design textbooks. North By Northwest, with Saul Bass's impressive design work, also utilizes photographs cropped onto a simple background. Even Picasso was doing cut-and-paste work in 1914, slightly before Adobe debuted their computer program. ![]() ![]() ![]() While I agree that the current iteration of posters / home media covers is disappointing, it's only slightly less so than the past. People got bored with endless Struzan knockoffs, and things had to move on. We also now live in a digital world of moving pictures with nonstop access to streaming, well past the era of Blockbuster Video. To get people interested in movies, we get trailers, teasers and interviews, entire tv series that are little more than ads for movies, and everything else shoved at us on tv and the internet. Posters and print ads still have a purpose, only diminished, so they're usually done on the cheap. While designers once had large posters or even billboards to sell the movie, they now have to deal with thumbnails on a phone. Traditional artwork can't always do that. As a result, we often just get simple photographs and interns with graphics software, while the big money is spent of video ads, which can be quite impressive. Even so, things aren't all bad. It's often not the principal artwork, but there's some lovely and effective marketing out there in the photoshop era, and this is just some stuff I already had on my hard drive. Some of it, like The Good Place and White Collar ads below, are obviously composited, but still eye-catching artwork that captures the essence of the shows. In one case, they captured an entire series without any words or color. The airplane is from the opening credits of a mediocre show no one watched, but it definitely made me want to stick around. Like a lot of comic book films, V For Vendetta went all out with drawn ad designs. Then there's the all the fan art you can find online. There's no reason for studios to pony up when people are doing it for free and sharing it on social media. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Anyway, sorry for the design diversion. As for the topic at hand, I really hope the director's cut's on this release. |
