Stranger on the Third Floor ⭐⭐⭐½ (1940)

Often credited as the first film noir in 1940, it's easy to see why: an innocent man caught up in a crime he didn't commit, voice over narration, told mostly in flashback scenes, and Chiaroscuro lighting. Two great film noir actors are also present: Peter Lorre and Elisha Cook Jr. in an early roll.

Originally 15 minutes long, only 12,5 minutes are preserved. You have to know the story to understand what is going on, but I guess the audience at the time would have. It is hand colorized, and there are some nice effects. Also it shows a siege, and the final moment is done well.

A 2 minute short about a country bumpkin who believes what he sees on the screen is real. Is this were the idea about people believing the trains in films were going to hit them came from?

They're editing now, baby! They show both the firemen on the outside and the inside of the apartment with the fire. Most of the runtime of six minutes is spent on showing the fire trucks on the road.
