Default Duplicate entries (Official)

If there was an old duplicate entries thread it might have been merged into some other thread(s). I've made this the official one, so please post duplicate entries you find here

Isn't this the thread for duplicate entries or have I been posting in the wrong thread for the last year or so.

We got quite many hits on that barcode from the barcode scanner in the app, so obviously someone owns a copy with that barcode. Since added, there's been 43 persons who've put that edition in their collection instead of the other.

Maybe, but I don't know. If they used the barcode scanner in the app, then that is the one they'd get a match on. If it didn't exist in the database, they would not get a hit and would need to search by typing it.

Is the only difference Best Buy and Amazon? Why should separate editions exist just for that? Just like the Total Recall one above, if there actually is no difference to the two releases, why are there two different barcodes? Any way around this?
Yes, sometimes retailers have different barcodes for more or less same release (disc content same, but maybe bundled with exclusive extras), later on re-issues might get new barcodes.

As it is now, the way to define this in the database is to have two separate entries, each with their own barcode.

Also, regarding scanning barcodes, I've scanned many DVDs (UK) that turn up no results. Is the only way to add these titles to the database through browser?
Yes, the only way is to add them through the browser.

there is a duplicate of marvel avengers and also Indiana marathon. I know that I was one that created the first one.
I am also missing the dark knight marathon and die hard marathon. I created both of those. they are both gone. I hope that I don't need to create them again?

OK so now that we have an official duplicate entries thread, is someone going to take care of removing them as well?
Hardly any (if any) were removed over the past year.

Lots were taken care of, but no notes are made by the staff to save time. Posts about duplicates that have been taken care of, are merged into this thread:
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=156898

So if you see a duplicate report post in that thread, it has been handled. We really appreciate the reports about duplicates to keep the database clean and tidy, so please continue reporting if you run into any and the staff (who is very busy) will clean them every now and then
(It's not that we don't care it's a time problem).

One easy way to solve this is for people to stop rushing to create entries for unverified exclusives or variants. Just look at 300: Rise of an Empire. Best Buy is not getting a Steelbook, yet someone created an entry for it just so that they could get "credit" for it.

There's also a problem with people uploading fake/custom cover art, which further adds to the confusion.

So when duplicate entries get deleted does that title come out of my collection count?

There's got to be a way for contributors to see which titles are already entered and just need to be approved. The dupes were probably added while whichever one was first was waiting in line.

I've thought about this many times, and it would be hard.

Even restricting what can be duplicated under "Retail information" when adding a title won't work, since they mostly use the same codes.

I guess we'll be stuck with dupes every now and then, until there's another solution for preventing them.
