I'm developing my basement as one big room that will be half "dedicated" home theatre and half play area for the kids. There is currently no insulation or sound proofing between the floor joists above. I'll be putting drywall on the joists for the ceiling but I was thinking of adding standard fibreglass insulation to help dampen sound.

Problem is because of the ducts/various other things between the floor joists I'll only be able to put insulation in about half the ceiling (the home theatre half). Will there still be a pretty big benefit to adding insulation? I think so but need an expert opinion.

To Rike255, the choice insulation material and the thickness are two aspects that need to be looked at carefully. There is plenty of information on the internet. I did the research and decided on wood fibre produced in Denmark instead of the alternatives of rock wool and glass fibre wool. The simple choice, even though marginally more expensive was made on the premise that the latter two are not pleasant to work with and also represent varying degrees of health hazards both pre- and post-installation. I had found a better product but unfortunately it is only available in the North American market. The alternative product is UltraTouch (by Bonded Logic Inc.), which is manufactured from recycled denim. The sound absorption/transmission factors are also available on the internet.
