If by "dominant", you meant "most watched", then auto racing is probably the second or third most watched in the country.

The old adage is that the hardest thing to do in sports is hit a round ball with a round bat.

Babe Ruth - greatest hitter of all-time by a mile and one of the best pitchers of all-time. And he accomplished all that while being fat and a drunk.

And I think there is one guy being badly overlooked - Jim Thorpe. He may not have been the greatest all-time at any one sport but he was unbelievably great as many.

Now there's someone who knows what they're talking about. The one thing that is somewhat of a myth though, was that he was a fat slob. The Babe was 6' 2", 215 lbs., which would be an average build for a baseball player today. He definitely did have a beer belly, but it's not like he was pushing 3 bills.

Good point. By today's standards he wouldn't really be considered overweight, but he probably was by 1910-1930'ish standards. Somewhere I did read that he swung an incredibly heavy bat too. His bat weight was something like double what today's players typically use. Which is remarkable given I don't think Ruth ever lifted a weight or had any real exercise routine.

That's why I voted other

Go sit in a car that is so hot you sweat off a couple pounds in a few hours, puts a good bit of G's on your body for 3-4 hours, stick a car in between two other ones with a few inches to spare on each side (if that much) at 190+ miles per hour while realizing that move could cause you to end up in the air, upside down, on fire or all of those in a split second and then come and tell me how much of a man you are

I guarantee you you'll be exhausted mentally and physically.

Here is a list I found on-line with wich I agree overall. The differrance is that it didnt take american stars only, and didnt forget about some great american sportsman as well. (see bolded ones).
I was mesmerized that you didnt include a single Soccer player (most famous sport in the world) in your list, wereas this list includes 4.
Plus, you forgot Roger Federer, Luis Armstrong, Michael Schumacher, Maradona and many more, putting people relatively uninfluential in sports history on your list instead.
Forgeting Pele alone (#1 on this list) is just plain wrong.
Here is the list.
http://worldoreason.blogspot.com/200...-all-time.html

1. Pele - Soccer
2. Jim Thorpe - Football, Track and Field
3. Tiger Woods - Golf
4. Muhammed Ali - Boxing
5. Jessie Owens - Track and Field
6. Michael Jordan - Basketball
7. Carl Lewis - Track and Field
8. Jack Nicklaus - Golf
9. Wayne Gretzky - Ice Hockey
10. Jean-Claude Killy – Skiing
11. Lance Armstrong-Cycling
12. Garfield Sobers - Cricket
13. Garrincha - Soccer
14. Hank Aaron - Baseball
15. Miguel Indurain - Cycling
16. Aryton Senna - Motor Racing
17. Johan Cruyff - Soccer
18. Pete Sampras - Tennis
19. Diego Mardonna – Soccer
20. Roger Federer – Tennis

21. Michael Schumacher - FI

You are wrong.
Ask any knowlegable person about sports (unlike you, your own words) and Jordan wont be their #1. Its #6 on their list, not bad at all.

And if this is only US, I get it, its fine, than just change the thread name to (gretaest sportsman of US).

That list is a joke. Ruth at 26?

And yes, Jordan should be higher than 6th.

Free agency didn't exist back then and there was abour 8 total NBA teams most of the season Russell's Celtics won the championship. Winning 11 championships is a big deal but you have to look at it in context. Jordan and Magic played in an era with well over 20 teams and free agency. You're comparing apples and oranges by comparing Russell to today's players.

In the post-60's Celtics era of dominance care to guess who has the most rings as a player? Robert Horry with 7. Would you consider him an all-time great too? I highly doubt that.

It's a terribly list IMO. Hank Aaron the greatest player of all-time? No way in hell. It's Ruth by a mile. And according to that list the 4th greatest baseball player of all-time and greatest pitcher is Roger Clemens. What a joke. Even discounting the steriods Clemens used and going by numbers alone Clemens is not the best pitcher of all-time, probably not in the top 5.

I'll have to find the article but I recall an expert on MLB statistics who did a projection and came to the conclusion Babe Ruth would have had well over 300 career wins, probably over 350 had he been allowed to remain a full-time starting pitcher. Ruth actually had 89 career regular season victories at the age of 24 when he went to NY and was permanently switched to an outfielder. He was also 3-0 with a 0.87 ERA in 31 innings in World Series as a pitcher.
