Wal-Mart WM Black History Month display - $3.74 DVDs (Above the Rim, Benjamins, Akeelah, etc.)

Not all of the DVDs in the display are $3.74, but here are the ones I remember at that price:

- Above the Rim (bought this because of Chloenator's post - there's no Blu version)
- All About the Benjamins (which I bought too and will probably regret, but no Blu for that either)
- ATL (which does have a Blu, so I passed)
- Akeelah and the Bee (already have the DVD)
- Gospel Hill (bought it on my second trip)

Maybe one or two others too - not sure.

For me, the Black History Month display was in the back, across from the TVs, near the photo side.

Above the Rim hahaha! Great movie to promote black history month. I wonder if they are gonna have a gangsta rap CD display to go with it!

I watched All About the Benjamins last night. Surprisingly fun movie, and looks really good for a DVD (on an upscaling Blu-ray player anyway). It's miles ahead of later Ice Cube "buddy" movies like Ride Along, even though Kevin Hart is probably a more interesting personality than Mike Epps. Definitely worth $3 and change, particularly in the absence of a Blu release.

I recently found out that Tommy Flanagan (Chibs from SOA) in the villain in it, which kinda makes me want to watch it.

Oscar Isaac is also in it, though in a very small role.

Ditto for Anthony Michael Hall, who is credited at the beginning (unlike Isaac, whose name only appears in the end credits).

Both roles are tiny.

Saw and bought one more:

Gospel Hill

I completely bypassed it the first time, thinking it was about church and gospel music. It's actually a decades-old murder mystery, kinda like Ghosts of Mississippi, if I had to guess - but hopefully better than that turgid pile of crap. The cast is stellar.

Do you know if it's Anamorphic Widescreen? Always a concern with older DVDs.

BTW, in case you don't know what I mean, this is what a non-anamorphic widescreen picture looks like.

Even I am grateful for the quick image on the fly. So non-anamorphic is just displaying the entire image in its natural format within whatever display is up, right? Anamorphic stretches it to fill the monitor?

Anamorphic stretches it, but doesn't remove the top and bottom black bars if they exist. I don't think the stretching is artificial if it's anamorphic though, but someone else can chime in. Non-anamorphic, as the pic indicates, gives you a rectangle with bars on all four sides of the screen - horrible, but wasn't an issue before widescreen TVs were the norm.

Is Dead Presidents anamorphic or non?

I haven't watched the movie yet but I just popped it in to see.

Unfortunately, it looks to be non-anamorphic. Black bars on all four sides in my TV's normal mode.

Crap! What a waste, especially since a Blu release is unlikely. I've always wanted to see the movie, but I won't bother because non-anamorphic is unwatchable to me.
