Why are you so bothered about my opinion? I live in Asia all my life and no one I know even heard of West Side Story, we’re a group of film enthusiasts so I formed my opinion. If you disagree, too bad I don’t care, you shouldn’t too.

I can't wait for a look at the new poster (whenever it comes) for WEST SIDE STORY. Posters for Spielberg's movies are always great.

I don’t care about your opinion, it’s just that you are writing rubbish. Why do you talk for the whole of Asia, it’s a continent with a lot of very countries, many of which are attuned to Western culture including West Side Story.

Spielberg had better get this right. He hasnt made a good movie is a long time. A real long time. Why he chose this is beyond me. The original is hard to sit through and I dont think it would resonate with modern audiences. Musicals can be a tough sell.

Bridge Of Spies and Ready Player One were good.

In my opinion...
War of the Worlds (2005) - Great
Munich (also 2005) - Masterpiece
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) - Not a fan favorite, but I like it
The Adventures of Tintin (2011) - Good
War Horse (2011) - Good
Lincoln (2012) - Great
Bridge of Spies (2015) - Really good
The BFG (2016) - Good
The Post (2017) - Really good
Ready Player One (2018) - OK

"Hasn't made a good movie in a long time"
How long we counting as a "long time"?

Spielberg may not have made a masterpiece in some time, but to say he "hasn't made a good movie in a long time" is preposterous hyperbole.

Yeah, he still make good films. But personally, he hasn’t been making the films I expected him to make. I’ve always been excited for every new project since I was a kid, but now it’s just like “okay”. I guess he grew up, while I never did.

Same with James Cameron but at least Spielberg has been active.

interesting that WEST SIDE STORY is unknown in your area. Otherwise you would surprised... the same is THE SOUND OF MUSIC to the german speaking People (Switzerland/Austria/Germany). No one know this Musical but in other Areas from the USA, to Asia/India, to South-America... everbody know it.

My opinion to the NEW West Side Story... im not really interested. Im surprised that Spielberg picked it up... it Looks like he's out of new ideas.

Before 1970ís the the local films were more popular and at their peak (honestly I almost never watch local films anymore now). Foreign films were limited back then, the ones that opened wide here were mostly war films. I grew up with my father telling me about The Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia, The Great Escape, The Dirty Dozen, etc. There might be small showings of other genres for the rich people but they certainly not known to the general public. Thatís what I mean of West Side Story not being a classic here.

We get to see many foreign films in 1980ís when they started showing them on TV, first time Iíve heard of The Sound of Music as well then, but Iíve never seen it even now (including the remake). I love musicals, but old (classic in the western countries) foreign musicals just arenít part of our life, so the remake had no interest to us. Just the interesting ones.

Rita Moreno’s Role in New ‘West Side Story’ Is More Than a Cameo: ‘It’s a Real Part’

Quote:
“At first, it was interesting when I heard there were rumors that they were going to do the movie again, I was nervous, and I have a feeling a lot of people were,” Moreno, who is an executive producer on 20th Century Fox’s “West Side Story,” said. “Then, when I heard that Tony Kushner, a brilliant playwright was going to do the script, I got worried because I thought, ‘Well, he’s so intense, I don’t know.’”

She continued, “Here’s another thing I can’t resist telling you. I’m going to brag one more time. It pleases me so because it is not a cameo. It’s a real part. It’s a real thing. Talk about full circle. Is that insane? Is that crazy?”

Moreno, 87, said about the upcoming Steven Spielberg-directed film, “Boy, are you in for something.”

Maybe the 90's? I would say Jurassic Park was a "universally liked hit."

So was Saving Private Ryan, which was the highest-grossing war movie ever worldwide until American Sniper came along. One could make a case for Catch Me If You Can as well, as it grossed over 350 million back in 2002. Both are very well-liked to this day.

Lincoln and Bridge of Spies: both were Best Picture Oscar nominees and won an acting Oscar, universal acclaim on Metacritic, and A Cinemascores and very commercially successful (Lincoln in particular was a huge hit domestically, obviously a title with less international play but that money was just the icing on top), so they werenít just a criticís or audience thing. And again, I think many people view Lincoln especially as one of his best films, and thatís from this decade.

Did someone actually argue that Munich isn't "a good movie?!"

It was only a matter of time before Spielberg did a musical because they have been getting. awards and he likes shiny trophies.

I just thought it do an original one or a stage one that hadn't been made into a movie.

It is very disappointing that he has gone down the road of remakes.
