Default Maniac Cop (Remake)

Quote:
A week ahead of the upcoming Cannes market, Wild Bunch has revealed they will be producing a remake of William Lustig’s 1988 cult classic Maniac Cop.

ScreenDaily reports that the production is spearheaded by Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn, who is producing alongside Lustig, director of the original, and Wild Bunch. The director will be announced in Cannes, which means it probably isn’t going to be Lustig, as previously thought.

The remake of 1980s cult classic Maniac Cop revolves around the hunt for a New York serial killer.

The script is written by Ed Brubaker, whose credits include the fantastic Captain America: The Winter Soldier! How about that!?

Not even poor, old Matt Cordell is safe from the remake demons.

Who the hell is going to replace Robert Z'Dar.

HBO Has Ordered a “Maniac Cop” TV Series from Nicolas Winding Refn

Quote:
Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) and John Hyams (Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning) have been developing a new take on William Lustig’s Maniac Cop for a while now, and we’ve learned tonight via Deadline that the project has now taken the form of an event television series. The coolest news? It’s HBO that has given the series adaptation of the 1988 film a green light!

Refn and Hyams will both executive produce and direct, with Refn serving as show-runner.

“Set in Los Angeles, Maniac Cop is told through a kaleidoscope of characters, from cop to common criminal. A killer in uniform has uncaged mayhem upon the streets. Paranoia leads to social disorder as a city wrestles with the mystery of the exterminator in blue – is he mere mortal, or a supernatural force?”

“I’ve always been a devoted admirer of John Hyams,” said Refn. “We’ve been talking about a re-imagining of the Maniac Cop films for a number of years, but as we continued to work on the material, we found ourselves wanting to explore the world we were creating in greater depth. Turning Maniac Cop into a series will allow us to realize our wildest ambitions and to reach an enormous audience though partners HBO and Canal+. This show will be an unadulterated, action-packed horror odyssey. Given the current state of the world, though, Maniac Cop will also be a strong commentary on the decline of civilization.”

William Lustig will also exec produce the byNWR Originals series.

This might work. The original films never quite lived up to what I hoped they would be.

Sounds sort of interesting. I love the original trilogy & will probably give this a look when it comes out.

As it’s now a TV series, it’s really more of an adaptation than a remake and I can see this being far more expansive with Refn is doing it. Maniac Cop was a fun grindhouse pic, but hardly a masterpiece so this could be interesting.

And that what makes me nervous. With Refn's involvement, I'm afraid that this will get the Westworld treatment where you take an entertaining movie and turn into some super serious and dull series.

Obviously this won't be a 'remake'.

This is Nicolas Winding Refn, so expect something totally different than a shot by shot retelling. He's probably just using the title and basic plot of a murdering cop, then running off into 'Too Old to Die Young' territory.

I'm actually really excited (and surprised HBO picked it up, as it might be their 'Twin Peaks: The Return' in terms of not really for mass public viewing).

Neon drenched, ultra violent, killer soundtrack, TV show about a murdering cop directed by NWR. Why complain?

i had only seen these recently, and to be honest, i think they these are really awful. so i’m curious how this will turn out.

but how much time will this be? is this going to be ten hour or half hour long episodes? is that way more maniac cop than any of us want or need?

Have always liked the three films, specially part 2. It has some great stunt work in it.

Have you seen Too Old to Die Young? NWR can fill 10 episodes.
