Rather he directed Into the Woods instead of that Disney lackey Rob Marshall.

Sounds interesting, especially if it doesn't get modernised. I love the 1961 version, but the one flaw of that film has always been that the two romantic leads are very bland and therefore the tragedy of the story never quite worked for me the way it should.

Meh, Spielberg and Kushner should have better projects on their radar. I don't really get the point of this other than musicals are suddenly popular against post-La La Land and Spielberg hasn't really done one outside the opening sequence of Temple of Doom.

They had The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, but casting issues stalled the production. I wish they made that instead of this.

This seems so needless, and I love Spielberg. When he remade War Of The Worlds he had his own unique take on it, and love it or hate it, it was very different from the '53 original. But this looks to slavishly follow the original because Spielberg/Kushner see it as perfection; What's the point?

Same, sounded like a great story and Oscar Isaac is always fun to watch.

And the very obvious dubbing for Natalie Wood.

Marni Nixon was a great singer, but her dubbing in West Side Story and My Fair Lady is a detriment because her voice was such a bad fit for those actresses.

Seems completely unnecessary to remake this; I don't see how they can make it better than, or even as good as, the original. I wish Spielberg would tackle original projects instead.

True, I've never been a fan of casting non-singing actors in musicals and dubbing them. I would have much preferred to Hepburn's own voice to be used as she wanted to. Her voice didn't have much range but her singing in Funny Face and Breakfast at Tiffany's was charming nonetheless. Natalie Wood was miscast and she never stood a chance in any scene with Rita Moreno who steals the movie from her. It would be great to see a Hispanic actress who can sing as Maria.

Hepburn did her singing. She sang "Just You Wait" and some of "I Could've Danced All Night". All they could've done was either lower the songs' ranges to accommodate her voice or just pull a Les Mis and forget about singing "perfectly". If they wanted a perfect voice, then they screwed up with not casting Julie Andrews in the first place.

Meh. I was kind of glad that project stalled and he could move on. That project held zero interest for me. I prefer the Indy/Jurassic Park/Ready Player One Spielberg to the Bridge of Spies/Color Purple/Munich one.

While it is of course not "necessary", I am up for a new version of it.

This has been among his upcoming projects since forever, years and years before La La Land.

Mortara has a finished script, West Side Story doesn't. It's probably a at least half a decade away, if it ever happens.

But in general I agree that he should not waste his precious time on this.

Hepburn didn't have the voice for the semi-operatic music in MFL.
Her attempts are painful to hear.

Couldn't disagree more. I though it was an infinitely complex and fascinating story that could easily have made for his best movie since Munich. I hope it gets made.

"an old-fashioned, conservative musical" he says.

I'm sorry, is there is an overabundance of new liberal musicals?

Why not a musical that's never been made into a movie before? There aren't any of those?

Hamilton anyone? Sure there's a list of musicals that's never been movies lying around somewhere.

Oh, and I dare them to come up with an actor that can match Rita Moreno as Anita. Pretty sure they can't.

I just want Robopocalypse to happen. This doesn't exactly get me excited, but I'll see anything Spielberg does.

Not that he ever was that prolific in the horror genre. He did two TV movies which were horror films (Something Evil and Duel) Only one feature film he officially directed could be classified as horror (Jaws) and the one all out horror film he directed (Poltergeist) he never was credited for as the director. Science fiction and adventure films are the two genres he's far more associated with.
