So what's the point of this release again?

One thing I can tell you without doing a BD comparison, is that the compression on the UHD-BD is better than on the (at least Japanese) BD at any rate. I could see compression artifacts when I did a very quick comparison on my projector on the BD, which were absent on the UHD-BD.

(PS: the pics got out of order, but whatever)

I watched this last night at a friend's house. The HDR on a movie as pretty as this enhances it a TON. That being said, some sequences looked jarringly smoother, dunno if it was some setting with the TV that was doing this but most 3D scenes moved at a high FPS than drawn scenes. Still, not a deal breaker. I hope the UHD releases in the rest of the world at some point at a more affordable price.

I'm assuming a UHD of this stateside isn't happening anytime soon?

Thinking of grabbing this from Amazon JP, has it really dipped below 8000 yen or does it usually hover around that price? Thinking of grabbing this, GitS and Akira..

From reviews this isn't a PQ or audio upgrade one could hope for, the blu-ray is 99% same. GitS 1 is a nice upgrade and also Mary witch something got a nice DTS:X track for UHD.

Akira hopefully hopefully will be good but I would wait for reviews so it's doesn't get the GitS Innocence treatmeant.

Thanks for the insight! I just got an LG c9 65", so i'm just tempted for the HDR improvement, but if it's that's similar I might as well wait.

Also, do you know if the special features on the other discs also contain english subtitles?

Yeah seems this movie was produced with SDR in mind (like all anime so far) so no real benefit. You will get a little changed colors from what I have seen on your name. Nothing to write home about.

Sorry haven't had time to check extras for subs.

Ah that makes sense, bummer but I'll hold off and just pull the trigger for GitS. if you check on the extras feel free to let us know!

EDIT: It also looks like none of the JP sellers are shipping to the US

Wow, that's not a bad price at all (~$43 shipped to the US)!

And just to confirm, both discs for the HK release are region A compliant and contain English subtitles?

4K discs are all region and HK is in region A (to separate it from China which is C).

I think the 4K disc is worth it, there are some really bright highlights with the sun and the comet pops a bit more.

You can extract the english sound track from the blu-ray disc and mux it back to the UHD. It's worth the effort.

I tried to do this with the UK Blu but the two versions seem to run at an ever so slightly different frame rate. Never could get it in sync.

UK (later printings) and the US BD run at 24fps. JP BD/UHD runs at 23.976fps. You'll have to adjust and re-encode the audio, or change the framerate of the video. The latter can be done without re-encoding.

Hm, didn't know that was possible. What tool do you use to do that? MKVToonlix gui or something?

Yeah, you can use MKVToolNix to change the framerate of the video.

Framerate can be changed with the "Default duration/FPS" option, but I believe the "Stretch by" option can also be used.

For audio it's best to just use Audacity.

Does changing the framerate have any negative impact?

Does Audacity have options for reencoding audio via framerate?

Not that I know of.

Not in framerate, but in percentages. Use the "Change Tempo" function. From 24fps to 23.976fps is -0.1% and from 23.976fps to 24fps is +0.1%.
