I didn’t really like this much at all. I gave it three out of five in the poll when I saw it last week, which on reflection feels very generous now. One of my least-favourite films this year. I thought it was technically competent for the most part but had a troublesome and unedifying message in a plot that felt, to me, artificially contrived to arrive in a situation that ‘allowed’ for it. ‘Problematic’ would be a nice way of putting how I felt about a lot of it.

2 and a bit stars, initially rounded up in the poll to 3 (but as I said, on reflection I’d probably round it down to a 2 now).

Ignoring the fact that the Asian home video market is comparatively negligible or that there are only 12 substantial overseas physical home video markets, physical media sales have dropped year on year in the 11 years since Rambo. Example: Creed did $29m on home video, equivalent to 27% of its domestic gross, while just two years later Creed 2 did just $13.8m, less than 12% of its domestic gross. By contrast, Rambo almost matched its theatrical gross on home video. That's how drastic the decline has been.

Creed sold 29 million in home video from 2016-2019. Creed II has sold 13.8 million in home video from March-June. I agree with and understand the point you're making, but in this specific instance, comparing 3 years of sales to 4 months worth makes for a pretty big difference.

While home video sales have fallen, digital sales have increased with time, so it's not like it's become impossible for studios to make back such money. Rambo is already pretty close to breaking even going by the 55% rule, and if Hellboy 2019 can make 11 million in disc sales, I'm sure Rambo can as well.

Except the sales figures for Creed for the same equivalent first four month period are around $22m, meaning only a quarter of its total came from the subsequent 28 months. And the retailers and taxman take a substantial bite out of those figures (ditto streaming platforms, with streaming returning less to studios per sale than discs even after savings on production cots). The days when home video could save a film are disappearing in the rear view mirror.

As for the 55% rule - only if marketing were free. Lionsgate and Millennium will be okay, but pretty much all the other distributors worldwide are looking at a loss or at best breaking even eventually on TV syndication. It's not managed to break out in any overseas territory.

Good point, I didn't look at the numbers close enough, didn't realize such a large chunk of sales was in the first several months.

If they got managed to get any tax breaks with the project, that'd certainly help the other distributors though.

Having dealt with Avi Lerner in the past, you can bet on that. He knows how to make the numbers work in his favor while staying just the right side of legal, but those tax breaks only go to the production companies - the overseas distributors are on their own. The problem for the franchise going forward is the same as the hoped for Dredd sequel that never happened: having sold the film for pretty good prices worldwide to distributors who saw it bomb in theaters, you aren't going to get many of them coming back for more if the home video numbers turn out a bit better than expected.

I was surprised at that Creed percentage too - it wasn't that long ago that that period would have accounted for around 63% of sales, not 75%. Hellboy home video numbers should be a given even at worst for this, though, and probably better.

What did everyone think about Rambo's line of wanting to be a soldier when he grew up?

It's been probably 15 years since I've read First Blood so i don't know if it is addressed but I always liked the idea of him being unwillingly drafted.

I remember my Dad telling me stories of watching TV and the news reading off a roll-call of names that were to be drafted and how nerve wracking that was.

With John's breakdown at the end of First Blood and just wanting to go home, I assumed he was drafted and didn't want to go to war but just ended up becoming the ultimate soldier.

To find out that he actually wanted to be a soldier changes the perspective to me a bit.
