I’m getting it even if it doesn’t have subtitles. If you have an Oppo you can add the subtitles to the playback by USB. I’ve decided I’ll start doing that on some of these 4K releases that aren’t English friendly.

Even in SDR, I'm loving the HDR upgrade.

Checked VAP's site, and the technical specs have changed.

Audio is as follows:
Japanese LPCM 2.0 Dual Original Mono
Japanese LPCM 2.0 (2019 remix downsample)
Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1

So there's no complaints with the audio. Original mono included and 2 remixes.

Also listed is 「2層」(2 layers), however, this doesn't exactly say what disc storage will be used exactly, though I suspect it will be a BD-100 considering the 7.1 mix that's being added (and considering it's a Japanese UHD, that 7.1 mix will probably end up being at least 6 or 7 mbps by itself).

How do you sync them together?

You re-time them to the thing you want to sync them to.

Problem is, with the Oppo, you need one subtitle track available on the disc for the menu option to list the USB track. Couldn't get it to work with Mamo because it did not have any disc subs. Anyone, know of a workaround?

I haven't been able to find a workaround for this problem. I wish Oppo would fix this in a firmware update.

EDIT: I just contacted Oppo about this and they told me that if a disc does not have any subtitles, it probably doesn't have the coding to handle any subtitles. So, since Oppo claims a fix to this would override the authoring of the disc, Oppo can't update the firmware.

You can rip the disc as a workaround. I'm pretty sure I'm not allowed to discuss specifics but you can make an MKV with the subs baked in. Not ideal but it is something.

Yeah, I was initially disappointed with the response, but at least it's only a problem with a few of the discs in my collection. If you have the means to play back on a computer, then the software might be able to add those external subtitles. However, I've only tested this with a Blu-ray, not a 4K UHD Blu-ray, so YMMV.

To use a PC, you'll still have to rip the disc. I'm positive the only fully licensed programs that play Blus don't allow subs to be added. So, you have to rip and then play back in VLC, which has shaky support for discs (including 4K) but will let you do just about anything you want if it can play them. That or make MKVs, which let you add subs, audio tracks, etc.

yeah, the trailer looks terrible... I don't mind the colors, sure they won't look flat and dull in HDR.. but the detail and the grain are gone. Let's hope the disc is not like that, what a waste it would be.

It’s a Q-Tec Disc, so that’s to be expected.

Yikes! Looks like that is what we'll see on disc going by Space Adventure Cobra and Mystery of Mamo. I kinda figured TMS would take this route, though I swore Studio Ghilbi did the initial SDR restoration for their works BD set a while back, which should give them more control and not have TMS and Q-Tec do their worst on it, but guess I was wrong. Easy pass for me.

TMS did the SDR 4K restoration of The Castle of Cagliostro, Studio Ghibli just authored the disc and distributed it.
Hopefully, a newer 4K release (from Studio Ghibli this time) will come out alongside Miyazaki's new film but only time will tell.
It is possible, considering that Studio Ghibli's Blu-ray release is still on print and the 4K release doesn't contain a regular Blu-ray.
