France La Rose écorchée (The Blood Rose) 4K UHD (1970)

Original post:

So this isn't completely confirmed yet, but Le Chat Qui Fume in France posted this on Facebook:

Quote:
Via Facebook's translator:

Quote:
We are working on our collector's edition of the flayed rose coming in April. Normally this DVD / Bluray Edition will be declined in 2 versions. One of them will be limited to 500 copies. But as we said a little lower in one of our posts, we are thinking of putting a UHD 4 k disc in addition to the bluray and the DVD. But we do not want to increase the price of our edition! You don't dream, we'd like to offer you an ultimate edition with 4 K for the price of a DVD / Bluray Edition! For the flayed rose!! To follow... and fingers crossed!
They also confirmed it will include both an English dub and English subs.

Very weird and exciting! Seems like niche UHD is finally starting to get a foothold in 2019! Really hoping this happens...

They also confirmed that it won't have HDR.

I’m surprised no one else seems to be interested in this release. An obscure French horror film from the ‘70s getting a UHD disc derived from a 4K OCN scan seems like a big deal to me.

The Painter Frédéric Lansac lives an idyllic love with Anne in their secluded castle in the center of France when a drama comes brutally to break this passion. Seriously burnt, the wife of Lansac is disfigured, without hope of healing. Until the day a surgeon agrees to give him a face. But for the operation to succeed, the donor must be sacrificed...

Successful synthesis between Eyes without face of georges franju and The horrible doctor orlof of Jess Franco, THE BLOOD ROSE reveals Claude Mulot to the general public with this horror film in the right line of the works of the Hammer and the Italian Gothic Cinema, brilliantly interpreted by Philippe Lemaire and Anny Duperrey. THE BLOOD ROSE is presented to you for the first time in the world in high definition version and, for the first time in France, in full version.

Is this the first UHD classic gothic? I might have to support this, it would be a blind buy. Jonathan Rigby had mixed things to say about it in his euro gothic book.

I just tried to order this, as pre-orders were delayed until today. I had a lot of trouble with the cart telling me I had multiple items in it, then I finally got it to show only The Blood Rose, went through to PayPal, and after the payment went through, I got a screen that says "Fatal Error" and no record of the order.

Even worse, the PayPal receipt shows I paid €25,00, but not for The Blood Rose. Instead, it claims I paid for a film called Amour et Mort dans le jardin des dieux (Love and Death in the Garden of the Gods).

Apparently, if this "Fatal Error" occurs, you are to contact Le Chat qui Fume, which I have now done. Hopefully, it gets sorted.

For the curious, I should point out that my situation was quickly fixed yesterday by someone from Le Chat qui Fume. I did have to place another order (and received another "Fatal Error"), but this time, the PayPal receipt had the correct item, so that did the trick, and their customer service was extremely helpful.

I'm really looking forward to the release. Hopefully, Le Chat qui Fume can release more UHD Blu-rays in the future.

Ordered the 4K today - wish the extras had English subtitles, but obviously glad the film does. Another slice of European cinema that you don't see anymore!

Is the case Mediabook/DVD sized? Looks that way from the photo but would love a confirmation.

Got mine today. Annoyingly, no menu so it starts to play and you have to change language settings by pop up menu.

UHD is more colourful and grain much better resolved than the BD, at least in the opening which is all I've watched so far.

Case is standard for Le Chat, cardboard, roughly same size as a mediabook.

Boy oh boy does this look good.

First of all, the restoration work done by Le chat qui fume here is absolutely beautiful. The movie looks stunningly pristine. Grain is extremely fine, but in a way that looks natural and filmic - not tinkered with. Fine detail is crisp and striking - you can see every little cranny in the crumbling, overgrown walls of ruins, and every blade of grass and stalk of straw in the rural setting is gloriously defined. Black levels are sumptuous, and even without HDR, something about the increased resolution seems to lend the image more dynamic life and depth than 1080p is capable of conveying. The rich velvet on some of the costumes stands out as an example of this.

It's really special to see an obscure French horror movie from the '70s get a home video presentation this perfect. I remember when I first got a 1080p set-up and put in Criterion's Pierrot le fou BD, I started crying. Something about seeing that kind of movie in a state-of-the-art format got to me. While I didn't quite start crying when I popped this disc in, I definitely felt something well up inside. Suddenly I had flashbacks of teenage days discovering Jean Rollin on DVD via a small CRT in my basement bedroom. And now to see something like that in this quality...in some strange way it seems to encapsulate how my life has progressed; my past and present meeting. Or something. I don't know. I'm lapsing into grandiose rambling.

Somehow I feel like this is a major UHD release, and I hope people don't sleep on it. Hopefully the cost of HDR grading comes down soon, because with that one missing element added, I think LCQF could be a significant player in the UHD market. In any case, I'm very happy this release exists.

My only nitpick - and it's very minor - is that I wish the packaging were BD-height, not DVD-height. It sticks out like sore thumb in my 4K section!
